Mayfair Farm

Growing up as one of seven children on a small farm in southwest Oregon, where my father worked a fulltime job in addition to farming, to support the family, Christmas for us always focused on everything besides gifts.  There were the school and church Christmasd programs, the drives to see Christmas lights and the the holiday decorations around the local VA hospital.  There was candy to be made, and cookies to be baked.  These were always Grandma's Sugar Cookies, rolled and cutout, with colored sugar topping.  Each of us usually received one storebought gift, in addition to a new set of handknit mittens and a hat from Mom's busy needles.  All of us would pour over the Sears Wish Book in the weeks leading up to Christmas, dreaming about all the games and toys in its holiday display.  I do not recall ever thinking I would receive any of the objects I circled.  My folks would place a screen around the Christmas tree Christmas Eve, and when we got out of bed in the morning, we could not see what was under it.  After farm chores and breakfast, made special with homemade butterhorns and scrambled eggs, we all sat around the tree.  One at a time the gifts were distributed.  One at a time, the receiver opened his gift, thanked the giver and showed the gift to everyone.  We kids were big fans of homemade coupon books, offering the recipient cleaning services, and other labors.  One Christmas, my mom had made a whole new wardrobe for my sister Ruth's doll, complete with wedding dress and veil.  My mom knew that gift would have been wasted on me!  There was the year my dad made a slide and combination merry-go-rund and teeter totter for all of us.  I think the most memorable year was the time each of us three oldest girls opened our packages to find contact paper covered wooden cigar boxes, filled with an assortment of embroidery silk, needles, and stamped tea towels.  We spent many days throughout the next year perfecting our skills, and learning new stitches.  Years later, my mom told us that with no money for gifts that year, she spent $.50 each on those gifts.  Today those memories have created a certain attitude in me about Christmas.  Gifts are an adjunct of Christmas, not the focus.  Christmas is the music, the family, the special foods, the lights, the friendships, and the time taken out of our daily routines to sit, listen, and feel the season. It is a time of reflection, and of hope in the coming year.  It is also our reminder to keep some of that hope and joy within us, for all the days ahead that need a little Christmas spirit.   I think that would be the best gift we can share with everyone this year: a little Christmas all year long.
