New book by Jonas van der Tol
The course of the French Wars of Religion, commonly portrayed as a series of civil wars, was profoundly shaped by foreign actors. Many German Protestants in particular felt compelled to intervene. In Germany and the French Wars of Religion, 1560-1572 Jonas van Tol examines how Protestant German audiences understood the conflict in France and why they deemed intervention necessary. He demonstrates that conflicting stories about the violence in France fused with local religious debates and news from across Europe leading to a surprising range of interpretations of the nature of the French Wars of Religion. As a consequence, German Lutherans found themselves on opposing sides on the battlefields of France. Read more (website Brill)

CfP 8th Gewina Woudschoten Conference
On 21-22 June 2019 Gewina, the Belgian-Dutch Society for the History of Science and Universities, will hold its 8th biannual meeting in the Woudschoten Hotel & Conference Centre (Zeist). The theme of this year’s conference is: Towards a History of Knowledge. This two-day conference brings together historians of science, medicine, and technology; historians of scholarship and universities; and all those from other fields with an interest in the history of knowledge. IEG Fellowship Programme
The Leibniz Institute of European History awards fellowships for doctoral students with a first degree in history, theology or another historical subject. Deadline 15 February 2019.
The IEG funds PhD projects on European history from the early modern period until 1989/90. We are particularly interested in projects with a comparative or cross-border approach; on European history in its relation to the wider world, or on topics of intellectual and religious history. Read more

The Extremist and the Moderate: A History of the War on Terror, 1543-1918

The ideas of the extremist and the moderate are at the heart of the War on Terror. That global project is, however, a culmination of the long history of these notions, rather than their cause. In this lecture, James Renton (Professor of History, Edge Hill University) will argue that the War on Terror is rooted in the Christian political thought of Europe’s bloody wars of religion, and its evolution in the centuries that followed, traversing the Enlightenment, European revolution, and empire. The Gnalić Shipwreck

The Gnalić shipwreck is a well-known site for studying the material culture, trade, shipbuilding, and seafaring of the Early Modern Period. This NICAS lecture by Katarina Batur (University of Zadar) will give special emphasis to the cargo of colouring materials. Preliminary analysis confirmed the presence of lead white (lead carbonate) and iron-based colouring materials, packed in wooden barrels and casks, and stowed in the ship’s hold. Additionally, other colouring materials, such as cinnabar (mercury sulfide), stibnite (antimony sulphide), arsenic based colouring materials, and minium (lead oxide) were present, but it is still uncertain how they were packed and stowed. Dr. Elsje van Kessel (University of St Andrews), who will speak about: Art, Law, and the Freedom of the Seas in the Early Seventeenth Century for the first meeting of a new series of bi-monthly Seminars in Global Art History and Heritage. This seminar is a cooperation of the NWO-Vidi project “The Chinese Impact” at Utrecht University, Leiden University, and University College Utrecht. It is organized by Mary Bouquet (UCU), Stijn Bussels (LU), and Thijs Weststeijn (UU).

Call UvA FGw Research Innovation and Sustainability Fund
The Research Innovation and Sustainability (RIS) Fund 2019 enables employees to apply for temporary teaching release in order to have more time to write grant applications, or to finish one or more (substantial, strategic) publications so as to strengthen the track record significantly and qualify for a successful grant application in the near future. Call UvA FGw Aspasia Fund
The UvA FGw Aspasia Fund aims to support women in their career development within the Faculty of Humanities at the UvA and to expand their opportunities to conduct research. Part of the Aspasia Fund will be used for temporary release from teaching duties through the present call for applications; another part will be used for other diversity policy activities. Cutting Edge Research Fund | Call for proposals reopened
As of 1 September 2018, the UvA FGw Cutting Edge Research Fund will be reopened.
Applications can be submitted continuously until no later than 30 June 2019. Furthermore, the call’s scope has been widen for Research Fellowships, now also enabling applicants to prepare an application by a consortium in the context of the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA) and the Dutch Top Sectors. NWO Matchmaking events - Dutch National Research Agenda
Researchers who are employed at Dutch knowledge institutions can submit proposals for the organisation of matchmaking events, within one or more of the 25 routes of the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA) from the portfolio for Research and Innovation. The purpose of the Matchmaking events is to form (new) consortia across the entire knowledge chain and developing proposals for innovative research. For each initiative, a maximum of € 10,000 can be applied for. Read more
