IEB NEWSLETTER 12/20/18

Top Actions:

We did it! Some of it, anyway. Your editrixes want to end this roller-coaster year on a positive note. The end of 2018 brings an end to bump stocks, hopeful news that the Tornillo migrant children may be released, the exeunt of Paul Ryan and scads of other GOP'ers, and a change of party for several folks who've seen the blue light. Still, like our fave First Lady, we're ready to bid farewell to '18 and welcome our new Members of Congress moving into a new and blue House in 2019.

We're taking a break at the IEB newsletter; our next full issue will be Jan. 10, 2019. Until then: here are some easy, important ways you can fight the Trump regime.

  1. Tell your reps: Go Green
  2. Tell Brown: Bring Sophea Back
  3. Tell everyone: Get "packed" for 1/3/19

Action #1: Support the Green New Deal

Deadline: right now - Support for the Green New Deal keeps growing (like a healthy plant)! At the COP24 UN Climate Talks over 300 state and local elected officials from the U.S. signed a letter calling for a GND approach to phase out fossil fuel use. Among other things, the letter calls for a concerted national effort and plan to guide investment in renewable energies and move our economy away from fossil fuels. Several of our East Bay elected officials have signed, but many are missing, including all of our state senators and assembly members. Check to find out whether your electeds at all levels signed the letter, and if not, tell them to sign on — see more info and a call script at our article.

Action #2: Pardon Sophea Om

Deadline: ASAP - You may have heard that the Trump Administration is working to deport Vietnamese refugees, but did you know it has already targeted Southeast Asian refugee communities for deportation? This week, 46 Cambodian refugees were deported to a country they fled as children, some of them for crimes committed decades ago. But Governor Jerry Brown has the power to pardon and bring back deported refugees like Sophea Om (referred to in some articles as Sophea Phea), a teacher and immigrant rights leader who was deported for passing a bad check when she was in her early 20s — a crime she served her time for. Call Gov. Brown at 916-445-2841 or email him and ask him to pardon Sophea Om and show his support for immigrant communities.
What to say:

My name is ____, my zip code is ___, and I’m a member of Indivisible East Bay. I’m asking Governor Brown to pardon Sophea Om so she can come home. The Governor would solidify his legacy as a strong supporter of immigrants by pardoning Sophea and other refugees.

Action #3: National Day of Action 1/3/19!

The new Congress starts on Jan. 3, 2019! Indivisible Day of Action events are being organized all across the country — keep an eye out for a special IEB email about our East Bay plans. Due to chaos in the White House, it's not clear whether the focus will be “No $$ for 45's Stupid Wall” or “Congratulations, Now Let's Save Democracy.” Maybe both! Check for updates as other East Bay events are planned.

Join the IEB CA-11 team on January 3, 12:00 PM at Rep. Mark DeSaulnier’s Richmond office as we deliver a “Back-to-Congress” backpack of tools to help DeSaulnier represent us in Congress. He'll get info on HR-1 to remind him that we expect Congress to reduce the influence of $$ in politics, limit the power of lobbyists, and expand voting rights — and other fun stuff. If you have ideas for what to include in or on the backpack, or if you can help at our backpack assembling party or be there with us to deliver the “Back-to-Congress” backpack and share your own message with our Congressmember, contact us by Friday 12/28 at indivisibleca11@gmail.com.

Matching-Grant Fund Drive for IEB Until 12/31

Deadline: December 31! - End 2018 by helping Indivisible East Bay spread our word and work! We're busy making plans to start the new 116th Congress off right (left?) by joining a national Day of Action on Jan 3. We'll rally at our district Congressional offices to celebrate the Blue Wave and a pro-democracy agenda, and to let our members of Congress know we're here to hold them to the highest standard now we've won some real power in DC. To help, we're doing a small fundraising campaign - a generous donor will match what we raise in December up to $500. With $1K we'd buy an IEB banner to proudly make our presence known at events, and a new batch of “blue wave” IEB T-shirts that we'll give away (first come, first served) at the Jan.3 Day of Action and at future events if any are left over. Please donate here!

No December All Members Meeting

Reminder: there's no December All Members Meeting. Enjoy the holidays — we'll see you on January 3 (see above and stay tuned for details) and join us at the next AMM on January 27. Meanwhile, want to work with us online? We use Slack, a chat system for talking about important issues, planning events, and team discussions. Ask us for an invite: info@indivisibleeb.org

State and Local News

Bowling with Rep. Swalwell

Representative Eric Swalwell greeted Indivisible East Bay members at his Seventh Annual Holiday Bowling Tournament in Dublin on Dec. 16. This year’s gathering doubled as a celebration of the Blue Wave, the Democrats taking control of the House!

Feinstein’s interim state director talks with IEB members

IEB members had our first chance to chat with Sen. Feinstein's interim state director, Peter Muller, at our Dec. 10 meeting. Top of agenda: the Green New Deal, a refreshing change from our normal focus on 45's injustices! We also discussed California-Mexico border immigration issues and much more. Read our report about the meeting.

Find out what it’s really like: Witness at the Texas Border

Last October local activist Tomi Nagai-Rothe volunteered with the Texas Civil Rights Project to work with immigrants detained at the U.S.-Mexico border. Hear Tomi speak about her eye-opening and heart-wrenching experience on Sat. Jan. 5, from 3 to 4:30 PM, in El Cerrito. Read more at our article.

We Could Not Make This Up

We thought the holidays were mostly a War on Cholesterol, but apparently Tucker Carlson is fighting his very own Global Struggle at this Most Wonderful Time of the Year — now against dread armies of gingerbread gender-neutral entities. Thank goodness someone's keeping the world safe! And speaking of blindly burying your head in the sand, they certainly came up with the perfect name for the sightless amphibian that does just that! And of course nobody misses the train quite like Sarah's dad Mike Huckabee, who wonders why the Clinton Foundation hasn't been shut down for selling our country to Russia. Rep. Swalwell got a titch snarky about that ... fortunately Kirstjen "Hulk" Nielsen is eloquent about how to keep us safe here north of the border!
