Tri-Service Cadet Dinner and Dance
LVIV Hall, Pavilion & Banquet Hall

Each year for many years 151 Squadron has hosted a tri-service formal dinner and dance for all of the Sea, Army and Air Cadets in the Region and this year there were approximately 250 cadets in attendance. It is probably safe to say that this dinner and dance which is limited to cadets from Durham Region is now the largest and most successful cadet social activity in the Province of Ontario. It is a full evening for the cadets starting off with a formal dinner followed by an evening of dancing. There were also numerous door prizes which were handed out during the evening.

Chadburn squadron is fortunate to have a large dedicated staff who all work so hard to make this evening a success. Their
involvement and dedication has allowed this activity to go on successfully for many years.

Squadron Flying Program

Yes, the squadron is up and flying. Here are some photos of our cadets who were up flying this past weekend at the Oshawa airport. If cadets are interested in getting airborne, make sure you signup.

Squadron Achievement Program

This week we have included a list of the top 13 cadets in the squadron’s cadet achievement program. Each time a cadet participates in an activity it is recorded on a master spreadsheet and CI Biffin spends many hours compiling our achievement records. The chart that follows is a current copy of the 13 top cadets in the squadron.

Cadets and parents should realize that it is this list that is used by the squadron staff when selecting cadets for awards, summer camp
training, and selections for the squadron’s year-end trip. The chart is a valuable addition to the squadron’s records and hopefully an incentive and motivator to get cadets involved with the many air cadet activities that are available to our cadets.

If cadets and parents would like to see the entire record, it can be found on the squadron website here:

Band Training

This is just a quick reminder to cadets that there are openings for more cadets in the squadron’s music program. If you are a cadet interested in music, get out on Thursday evening and get involved.

Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Shoot

At Rotary Hall

This past weekend Capt. Puglisevich and our air rifle shooting team held their annual potluck lunch for cadets and their parents. A great opportunity for cadets and parents to try their hand in the squadron’s very popular air rifle shooting program.

Friday Evening Sports

Cadets should remember that Friday evening is a sports parade. It is open to all members of the squadron who would like to just come out and play ball.

Upcoming Cadet Activities

Message from the Commanding Officer

As you may have noticed, this week’s newsletter features photos and descriptions of many different events. We believe an active schedule with a variety of activities is key to any Squadron’s success.

Many of you may not realize that we are set up to have a very active weekend flying program. Capt. Brosseau has worked tirelessly to arrange for pilots and to ensure that all the appropriate policies and procedures have been followed through our military partners. An Air Cadet Squadron should be flying and yet very few cadets show any interest. This is an experience they may never have again. Please encourage your cadet to sign up for weekend flying.

A special thanks to Capt Bliss and Lt. Diloreto for working tirelessly as the lead organizers for the Tri-Service dance. Capt. Puglisevich hosted the Marksmanship potluck
and Lt. Mastroianni worked diligently to assemble all the National Camp applications. Capt. Chandler and Mr. Weigel are putting together the Summer Camp applications and Lt. Booth is making the final collections for the Lottery Ticket sales.

As the Christmas season is upon us, and we round the curve, we are looking ahead to a very busy winter and spring. The Band, the Drill Team, the Marksmanship Team, and
the Sports Teams are all preparing for competition. We have a ski weekend, a Mess Dinner, an Annual Inspection, and
a year-end trip coming up. Speaking of the year-end trip, this is something we do every spring on the long weekend in May. Typically we will take 100 cadets on two buses away for a major excursion. Details will follow, but we encourage parents to make a note in your calendars.

One of my fears is coming true. I see many of our new cadets remaining uninvolved in squadron activities. We know from experience that unless a cadet engages in activities outside of the Monday evening training, we will likely lose that cadet within a year. I need the cadets and parents to understand that there are always openings for cadets to join all our teams. Nothing is select at this point. Even coming out for shoe shining on a Wednesday or sports on a Friday could make a big difference. What else can we be expected to do? We provide the activity and we keep the doors open. When you hear the statement “cadets is boring”. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Have a good week

Major Weigel
