December Issue
Missions, discoveries, 3D

Our December newsletter is my final message to you as a member of Iconem’s team. It is always a pleasure to share our newest projects, museum exhibitions, and 3D models with you, our readers. I am incredibly proud of what my colleagues and I have achieved over the last two years.

My last day at Iconem is later this month. We will introduce Iconem’s new Head of Development in the January newsletter; he is currently getting himself acquainted with our ongoing projects. But before I go, I want to share with you some of our most rewarding projects of 2018. You can discover below our digitisation of Mont-Saint-Michel for Microsoft, our scan of the Old City of Mosul for UNESCO’s reconstruction efforts, and our work to share digitisation practices with cultural heritage experts in 28 countries.

Iconem will continue to champion cultural heritage and its conservation around the world. It has been a source of pride for me to collaborate with women and men dedicated worldwide to protecting their heritage, which is often a difficult task.

I would like to thank my incredible colleagues at Iconem and our ever-expanding network of partners devoted to cultural heritage. It has been a privilege working with you.

Mont-Saint-Michel in 3D

In 2018, we expanded our work in Iconem’s home: France. We had the privilege of digitising Mont-Saint-Michel, one of our country’s most revered cultural heritage sites. Iconem scanned the monument for Microsoft, which used the 3D model to create a mixed reality HoloLens experience for the Musée des Plans-Reliefs in Paris. This 3D video flies over the abbey’s golden spire and explores its grandiose halls.

Reconstructing Mosul

In February 2018, Iconem scanned Mosul by drone for UNESCO as its technical service provider. This emergency documentation is part of UNESCO’s ambitious project, “Revive the Spirit of Mosul,” to reconstruct the city. Watch this video that combines drone and 3D video of Mosul to illustrate the extensive damage and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing reconstruction.

Iconem in Tunisia

Yves Ubelmann travelled to Tunisia in August to train locals in photogrammetry at the archaeological site of Carthage. This training is part of our efforts to share new technologies with heritage professionals around the world. Learn more about the training session on our blog.

Our world’s cultural heritage is threatened. Looting, urbanisation, mass tourism, armed conflict, and climate change damage and destroy irreplaceable sites where cultures emerged, languages developed, civilisations thrived. These imperilled heritage sites embody humanity’s rich cultural diversity. It is crucial that we document and preserve them now. Iconem’s mission is to further conservation of these endangered places by digitising them for exploration and study, today and tomorrow. Our expert team travels the globe, combining the large-scale scanning capacity of drones and the photorealistic quality of 3D to create digital replicas of our most treasured places, record them for future generations, and champion them today.
