Deck the halls with boughs of savings

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Dec. 17, 2018 Leading up to a contested election, Rep. Ted Budd (R-N.C.) spent considerably more tax money this year than other member of the House, mostly to fund mailers to constituents. By the end of the third quarter, Budd spent 81 percent of his annual budget, considerably more than the second-place finisher, Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.), who spent 75.5 percent. They were the only two to spend three quarters of their budget. The average office spent only 64 percent. The heavy spending means Budd's office will have to make do in its final months with tighter pursestrings, leaving him less cushion to pay staffers traditional end-of-year bonuses. Potential overspending comes with dire consequences: If the trend continues for the entire year, he could face having to pay back thousands of dollars to the U.S. Treasury from his own personal funds. Budd faced a contentious re-election that saw millions of dollars spent on each side of the aisle. At the second quarter's end, he was one of ten representatives on pace to overspend their annual budgets. Some people and organizations who "caught our eye" last week:
