2018 PUMC ANNUAL REPORT
This is a reminder that the 2018 Annual Report for PUMC is due on January 31, in FOUR weeks. This is an internal document meant to celebrate our accomplishments over the last year and maintain transparency with the church family who can't always attend our service.
Also please remember to record your small groups and other event attendance in the black notebook in the office so we can complete our statistical reporting.
You may download last year's report here: http://www.peterboroughumc.org/pumc-2017-annual-report/
Please let us know if you need any help completing your report.
WORLD RELIGIONS CLASS

The books are in for the Class on World Religions. Here is a sample of what we will discuss at the first session. This is how Adam Hamilton frames the discussion:

He describes how we will “explore several of the questions a theology of religions seeks to answer, beginning with, ‘If there is only one God, why are there so many religions? If there is only one God, wouldn’t that God clearly identify himself* rather than allow confusion and multiple religions to coexist?' It’s an important question, and one that has left a number of people struggling with faith altogether. I’ll offer one line of reasoning that makes some sense to me. Theologians speak of deus absconditus—a Latin term that translates as ‘the hidden God.’ While we may see God’s handiwork all around us (we ourselves are part of God’s handiwork!), we are unable to see God directly. In Exodus 33, Moses prays to God, ‘Show me your glorious presence’ to which God replies, ‘You can’t see my face because no one can see me and live’ (vv. 18, 20).”

I hope you will consider joining us.  We will meet on Wednesday morning at 9:45 Starting on January 16th.  Please let me know if you would like to have evening sessions for people who work during the day.  When I think about how ai see God, I think about the goodness I see daily in the acts of kindness all over the world. I also think of the beauty of this area when I take a walk.  It is breathtaking at times. How about you?  Where do you see God?

*(Hamilton has a footnote here saying he does not assign a gender to God, but he finds using the popular “Godself” is not helpful for many people so he uses “he.”  Hopefully people will not let this nuance interfere with the deeper purpose of exploring how we all understand God.)
