Nutrition Tip

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Holiday festivities are a wonderful opportunity to connect with family & friends, but what is the impact on the waistline? Urban legend is that the average person gains 5 lbs over the holidays. However, Yanovski and colleagues discovered this is closer 1 lb over fall/winter that is not reversed in spring/summer. While not much over 1 year, after 20 years this represents 20 lbs and is likely responsible for adulthood weight gain. More powerful than losing weight is to maintain your current weight. Weigh yourself in the summer and make a commitment to maintain the weight year round. Small edits in a week are easier than months of restriction.

Wellness Tip

Happy New Year!
So much happens in the 12 months or the 365 days or the 525,600 minutes that pass each year!  Many of us use the New Year as a time to push the “reset button” and increase the drive to change a unhealthy habit in our lives. What is the better approach to achieving the change you want?? Adopt a mindful approach, focus on the process itself, and develop greater competence of the actual activity, habit or skill you want to acquire.  Ie. If you want to increase your fitness level, focus on being able to push a little bit further every time you exercise…rather than being able to run 5 km within a week. PERSISTENCE ALWAYS PAYS OFF.
Baby Steps….Take them!

My name is Janai Martens and I am currently in my second year of the Physical Literacy degree at Mount Royal University. I play for the Mount Royal University women’s soccer team and am currently in my third year of eligibility. I have really enjoyed being in Physical Literacy at Mount Royal so far. The courses are so applicable to my life and are of genuine interest to me.

Being a student athlete has taught me a lot about time management and prioritization. With the help of my coaches, teammates, professors and family members, I am pursuing my passion of physical education and my dream to play on a university soccer team. Being a varsity athlete and a full time student has had its challenges but the HPED department at Mount Royal University and my coaches are great at being accommodating and supportive.

The Physical Literacy degree at Mount Royal is amazing. The professors are so friendly and helpful and you get to know them on a more personal level. I am so appreciative of the wonderful Health and Phys. Ed. community here at Mount Royal University and for the endless support that I receive from my coaches and teammates.
