"The Marvelous thing about a good question
is that it shapes our
identity
as much by the asking
as it does by the answering".

David Whyte

A new year begins. A different calendar. A fresh piece of paper. A clean slate. This happens because we humans decided it would be so, with a bit of input from the natural world.

During this time, it is traditional to make RESOLUTIONS.
Resolutions can easily communicate that we are not all right and that something (us) needs to change. While this is sort of true, it is not all the way true. Rather than starting with resolutions, (or resolving to not make resolutions) how about we start with QUESTIONS. (???)

This Sunday is Epiphany, which means, "to uncover". However, the Gospel lesson about Magi, gifts and a fear-filled king and city is full of questions. If we are honest, so are we. We just don't take the time to hear the questions that bubble up from our soul. Questions, the poet Rilke suggested, are to be LIVED. Ick. Give me answers, please!

Well, we may not answer a whole lot of questions this Sunday, but we will have space to listen for them. We will light candles, acknowledging the past and illuminating the future. We will sing and pray as always, with help from the Gratitude Band and pianist, Has
Yanh
Jianh.

Join us in person or through streaming.  Being together is a great way to start the New Year......

If you cannot join us in person, we will be attempting to stream, now in High Definition, internet streaming

Peace, Rev. Sharon Edwards

January Challenge Offering

January’s Challenge Offering will support Gingoog Christian College’s students, who come from economically disadvantaged families. GiCC is located in Mindanao, a southern island in the Philippines. In 2017-18 the college attained the highest enrollment in the school’s history. It was also chosen as co-partner & co-host of the first regional conference of the National Research Council of the Philippines.

It was a fulfillment of dreams of the GiCC founders, the Revs. Graciano & Florentina Alegado, to include the marginalized indigenous people of the farms & mountains surrounding Gingoog City in their educational ministry. Over the years, GiCC has served these people. Even our Piecemakers have been recognized for the lovely quilts that have reached children & their families.

Let’s support First Church in its local & national ministries.
