On Patrol

It's been pretty hectic at the beach over the Xmas & New Year break. With sunny & warm weather, crowds have been up with consistently 200 plus people at any given time and up to around 450 (yikes).

A permanent rip/ gutter has settled in down to the left of the surf club and we've had a roving patrol looking after this spot constantly talking to people who're wanting to swim in this area.
Prevention/education is the key as many people are still unaware of the dangers of rips and are first time visitors to Ocean Beach. We've already had well over a dozen rip rescues mainly using the surf rescue boards.

"Swim between the flags"  and "Don't swim near the rocks & rips"  are our two most used preventative phrases.
Thankfully we've had happy & well behaved crowds with lots of people enjoying our coast & hospitality.

Big thanks to all our amazing volunteers doing amazing work -  educating & preventing  - as well as rescuing and first aid (minor cuts & bee stings mainly).
We're all very proud seeing our members keep our public safe with a smile.

Swim safe folks

Education

Ask any one who has done a course with us and they'll tell you what a great sense of achievement it is. Not only that, what you learn could help save someone's life.  Our courses are free to members so we really hope to see more clubbies upskill this season.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest for those who would like to complete the following advanced training certificates
  • Pain Management
  • Senior First Aid
  • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
  • Spinal Management.
We will be running courses for this in January – March.
Interested candidates please email Rae : rae@raepowys.com.au and they'll be notified when courses are booked.

Here's two more of our wonderful Crew.
First Aid Officer – David Rae

What’s your Day Job? Community Paramedic with St John Ambulance, supporting volunteer ambos from Cranbrook to Walpole.
Number of Children? Henry 6yrs & Will 2yrs.
How long have you lived in Denmark? Martha, Henry and I moved down from Perth 5 years ago.
How long have you been a member of our Club? We’re newbies - I did my Bronze and Henry did his first season in Nippers last year.
What do you love about it? Being part of the community and it made me start swimming again.
What’s important about your role as First Aid Officer? I’m just learning, but we probably shouldn’t run out of bandaids this season.
What are you famous for? On a holiday with Martha’s Canadian friends, my first priority when we arrived at the holiday house was cleaning the toaster within an inch of its life. Now, any overzealous cleaning I do is referred to as:
“The Full David Rae”.
Water Safety Co-ordinator -
Bo Wong

What’s your Day Job? Photographer
Number of Children? Three of them, Sylva (19) Jetta (14) and Felix (12).
How long have you lived in Denmark? Five great years.
How long have you been a member of our Club? This is my second season, but it’s Jetta’s 5th season so I have lurked on the periphery awhile .
What do you love about it?
The people! I love the diversity and warmth of our surf club, it’s like no other.
What’s important about your role as Water Safety Co-ordinator?
Water Safety, I think the name says it all!
What are you famous for?  With the encouragement of the clubbies, going from being a scaredy cat of waves into a swim obsessed ocean lover.
