2020 November eNews
Dear <<First Name>>

Much has happened in the last two years, since the last newsletters and especially this year with Covid19.
Covid19 peaked just when we were celebration Passover at the beginning of this year. The pandemic/plague swept around the world making people self isolate in their homes just as the Israelites had to do in Egypt. This resulted in us having to celebrate the Passover by ourselves and sharing a virtual meal with others via Zoom.

We had arranged to lead a Passover meal with a congregation in Southport but at the last minute had to change to doing it over Zoom. Since then all our meetings have been via zoom. This allowed us to continue with the ministry of Beit Echad on the internet. We are now meeting together on Zoom every Kabbalat Shabbat Friday evenings and Shaharit on Shabbat mornings. This has led to some of the people who had been involved for some time deciding to depart, since we brought in more of what we were learning from Jewish liturgy and the understanding from our teaching from Yeshivat Shuvu.  We are fortunate to have Rose who is also part of Shuvu, as part of our fellowship. She is gifted with a beautiful voice and heart, and is being trained as a chazan so leads us in the liturgy and worship of our Messiah. Over the past number of years we have also been studying  Messianic Judaism through Yeshivat Shuvu, an online Yeshiva, a place of Torah study. So we are talmidim as covered in the Hebrew letter Lamed ~ל  given below. Yeshivat Shuvu is led by two Messianic Rabbis Itzhak Shapira and Steve Bernstein. We need to remeber that we all come under the Rabbi of rabbis, Yeshua HaMashiach who Moses points to in the Torah. Giborah has recently been ordained as a Morah, a teacher of Torah having completed four years of intensive study of Messianic Judaism with Yeshivat Shuvu .

We have just come through celebrating the high holy days of Festival of Trumpets (Yom Teruah), Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), Festival of Tabernacles (Sukkot) and the Eight Day (Shemini Atretz). Just click on the festival of interest to refer to our article on these Appointed times (Moedim) on our website. Coincidentally Covid19 has started to peak again in many countries as it did around Passover. This led Messianic Rabbis Itzhak Shapira  to write s book called 'The Besorah according to Covid-19' that has just been released in America. A must read if one wants a Messianic insight into the significance of these days.

So the year 2020 or more exactly the Hebrew years 5780/1 has been unique in relationship to the Appointed times as given in Leviticus 23. During this period the Lord has allowed this shaking to take place so the world will not be the same as it was before. This was brought out powerfully to myself with the tradition of shaking of the Lulav during the seven days of Sukkot, Feast of Tabernacles. This involves taking the four species as shown below that are referred to in Leviticus 23:40 On the first day you are to take choice fruit of trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the broLulavok, and rejoice before Adonai your God for seven days.

  1. The palm branch (lulav) bears fruit but has no fragrance, whose central pillar is referred to as its “backbone” (shidrah) resembles the backbone of man.

  2. The leaves of the myrtle branch (hadas) has fragrance but no fruit and resemble the eyes of man.

  3. The leaves of the willow branch (aravah) has neither fruit nor fragrance resembles the lips of man.

  4. The etrog is a citrus fruit that has fragrance and resembles the heart of man.

The three different branches, one palm, two willow and three myrtle branches are bound together as shown in the diagram. The etrog is brought together with these bound branches and waved/shaken in all six directions as part of rejoicing before the LORD. This carries significance at so many different levels of understanding.

  • At one level it can represent an individual made up of a backbone, eyes, lips and a heart releasing their self to the LORD in praise and joy.

  • Then again it can represent all types of people in the world being bound together as one:

    • Those like the lulav who bear fruit (do good works, mitzvot) but have no fragrance as they have no faithfulness in the Messiah.

    • Those like the myrtle who bear no fruit or good works/mitzvot but have the fragrance of Messiah.

    • There are many who like the willow neither bear fruit nor do good works, nor have any of the fragrance of Messiah.

    • But when bound together they have both fruit and fragrance!

    • Finally there are those like the etrog who bear much fruit and have the fragrance of the Messiah who are the tzadik, the righteous ones.

  • This then leads to a deeper level of understanding of prophetic insight into who and what the Messiah Yeshua is doing in our midst today as discussed below:

    • The Messiah Yeshua, the Tzadik is the etrog who joins with those who are bound together in love, is then shaken in all directions. There are many scripture that refer to the world been shaken by God (Psalms 46:6 82:5 Isaiah 24:18 24:19 Nah 3:12 Matt 24:29 Rev 6:13) but those who cling to Messiah will not be shaken. (Psalms 55:22 93:1 112:6-7 2 Cor 1:7 1 Thess 3:3 Heb 12:27-28)

With the USA elections taking place, further shaking is taking place. This is likely to increase and move into greater judgement. Especially if the Democrats gain power, as they are the ones who have largely through Hillary Clinton and Obama have defiled the sanctity of life through abortion and defiled the sanctity of marriage, two key pillars of a godly society that will bring God's judgement.

So as we go through this period of shaking may we take to heart that which Yeshua stated in John 15 about the vine and the branches. We need to be pruned so we will bear much fruit and build His Kingdom here on earth as well as bearing the aroma of the Messiah Yeshua in this world. So He may abides with us and we with Him as we enter this new season of 5781 and a year closer to His Return.

Shalom in Yeshua Our Messiah

The Torah and Bereshit
"In the Beginning... "

The Torah was given to Moses as God’s Scribe for him to copy down exactly as God dictated in His Presence. The first  book of the Bible is Bereshit,
"
In the Beginning Elohim created (bara et) the heavens and the earth."
This how Bereshit 1:1 is given below in Hebrew:

בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃

This is a good place to start to appreciate the depth of the Hebrew language and why all believers in Yeshua need to start to learn about it. This verse is made up from seven Hebrew words making a menorah with the central candle, (the shamash or servant candle) from which the other candles are lite, So the middle word אֵ֥ת  'et' which is not translated but indicates the direct object of the sentence. It comes directly after bara, to create. So in a sense the אֵ֥ת  Aleph Tav, the first and last letters of Hebrew alephbet were created right at the beginning!

On a different level the
אֵ֥ת as indicated above points to the 'servant' who is the Aleph Tav, Beginning and the Last, the Alpha Omega in Greek, Yeshua HaMashiach.  He is there right at the beginning before even the heavens and the earth were created.

So why is the first letter of Bereshit, the
בְּ beit?

  1. First, in Hebrew a preposition is not a separate word but generally is indicated by a letter added to the front of the word reshit רֵאשִׁ֖ית which means 'beginning', 'source' and is translated as 'in'. and then  'the beginning'.

  2. Secondly 'beit' means  'house', 'dwelling',  so God is creating a dwelling or house into which on the sixth day He placed Adam אדם.

  3. Thirdly, why is aleph א not the first letter since it has the gematria of '1' as well as '1000', while beit בְּ has gematria of '2'? Maybe this is indication that the בְּ dwelling is a means to the end which is Adam אדם whose name includes א which also is the first letter of elohim אֱלֹהִ֑ים God!

If you count the number of א in this first sentence, it occurs six times, which is the number of man. Also א can mean a thousand. So this hints at the six thousand years from the first Adam to the Second Adam with the Coming of Messiah! Note that we are in the Hebrew year of 5781 so Messiah.s return is imminent.

Hopefully this has increased your interest in the language of the Scriptures, the Holy Tongue, Lashon HaKadosh.
Please check out the significance of the Hebrew letters.

Lamed ~ ל
"The Heart of the Talmid"

While the letter Mem מָ is often mentioned as being at the centre of the alphabet, it is only so when all the Sofiot letters are included. The Lamed ל however is considered to be in the centre of the AlefBet as shown below: it is described in the context of being "in the heart of the alphabet" and one could also say ... "it is all about the heart."

                             אבגדהוזחטיכלמנסעפצקרשת

The centre [or heart] of the AlephBet

Meaning = ‘to study’ and heart’        Gematria = 30

Sound = "L" sound like in Love
  • Lamad למָד literally means "to study" and  is where we get the Hebrew  word TALMUD  תַּלְמֲוּד which means "to study"
  • Talmud does not mean law/oral law like so many think, but it literally means "to study"
  • From this we also get the word talmid ~ which is a "student or disciple"

What is the story of the Lamed?

Talmid תַּלְמֲד is understood to be linked to לב lev (heart)
  • The concept of a disciple or student has to do with the heart much more than about knowledge.
  • "A good disciple will see a transformation of his heart and not in his knowledge alone"
What is a Talmid תַּלְמֲד
  • According to the Hebrew dictionary, Talmid can mean ‘student, pupil, disciple, or follower
  • In western culture, we can compare students and call them "good, bad, mediocre" and so on
  • But in Hebrew language and Jewish understanding, this is not so: there is only one type of talmid
  • A talmid is simply "a follower" ... a follower of the one from whom they are studying
  • Ultimately we look to Yeshua who is The Teacher/The Rabbi although we know that He does gift others to teach us, those who are "under-Shepherds"
  • A true talmid is one who has his heart set upon his Teacher and what He is teaching, BUT it is also one whose heart is being transformed and changed in the process ~ from the inside out.

"Becoming a talmid is a process...
Everything that G-D does in the Kingdom is process based"

What is the preparation mode for becoming a Talmid
  • Discipleship is a process as given in Deut 11:19  "And ye shall teach them your children, talking of them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
Deut 11:19  ~   ולמדתם אתם את־בניכם לדבר בם בשׁבתך בביתך ובלכתך בדרך ובשׁכבך ובקומך
  •  limadtem  למַדתֶם  ~ is rooted in the word root למַד limad
  • It is a picture of a father instructing his children, in the sense that our children are the first ones to effectively become our disciples
  • The Torah suggests that before one can become a disciple, there is a mode for both the instructor and the one who is being instructed ...

... and there are four verbs in this process
(*the 3 highlighted letters in the words is the root word known as the shoresh)
  1. sittest        בְשִׁבְתְךָ B’shivtecha  even in resting, we can be discipled ~ be still and know that I am G-D
  2. walkest      ָוּבְלֶכְתְך Uv'lechtecha root לֶכְתְ lech’t to walk. Lech L’cha to go forth (Gen 12). We live busy                              lives but need to take God with us in all we do.
  3. liest down  וּבְשַׁכְבְך Uv’shochbecha when you lie down ~ G-D is saying, "when you lie down at the end of the day, make sure you end your day with Me."
  4. wake up      וּבְקוּמֶך Uv’kumecha ~ "when you wake up, rise up, put Me first" ~ as we are resurrected   each morning, we remember the power of resurrection through meditating on His word.

"We cannot compartmentalise God ~ my time is God’s time!"

The Book of Joshua also gives us a Mode of the Talmid, a Disciple

לא־ימושׁ ספר התורה הזה מפיך והגית בו יומם ולילה למען תשׁמר לעשׂות ככל־הכתוב בו כי־אז תצליח את־דרכך ואז תשׂכיל

"This book of the Torah shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy ways prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." Joshua 1:8
  • The Torah is trying to tell us that if we will observe the Torah as it is intended to be, then it will bring success to us ... we can bring G-D into all we do and find success or we can do things our own way and success will be difficult ... the choice is ours.
  • At the very least, are we reading Torah first thing in the morning and last thing at night?

We often hear about Yeshua being "the living Torah" ... but what does that mean exactly ?
  • It means He is alive and because He is alive, Torah is alive!
  • Think about the times we get involved in a story and then try to pick it up where we left off ages after we first started ... we can easily lose the plot and forget the little details
  •  When we are reading it everyday, it is alive because we are becoming immersed in it
  • Deut 11:19 is trying to tell us we need to be immersed in Torah
  • Jews pray three times a day in Synagogue: Morning prayer: Shacharit (שַחֲרִת), Afternoon prayer: Mincha (מִנְחָה) and Arvit (עַרְבִית, "of the evening") or Maariv (מַעֲרִיב, "bringing on night") ... it is like we are asking G-D to make us a talmid, remembering that it means "a follower!"

How do we become a Talmid ... how do we become the living Torah

This is the blessing we say each time we study the Torah:
"Baruch ata Adonai, Elohenu Melech Ha’Olam asher Kidshanu B’mitzvutav V’Tzivaznu L’asok B’devrey Torah."
  • "Blessed are you O God, the King of the Universe, Who sanctifies us in His commandments and commanded us to engage in the Torah."
  • We are saying "God you commanded us to be active (L’asok לַעֲסוק) in the word of Torah."
  • Why does the Torah use the word L'asok? The Rabbi's say we don't "do Torah" or "study Torah" but it is about the demeanour of the Talmid.

The definition of a Talmid, becoming a disciple is found in Romans 12:9-11

"Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord."

Spiritual Fervor is a specific Hebrew term that is used to describe the mode in which we are to become part of the Torah ... making it alive and active in our lives!
  • The Greek word spu-da (spu-de) /spiritual fervor is translated in the Hebrew to שקידה which comes from the word for almond.
  • Spu'de means something done with zeal and diligence ... in haste and with great labour, to give all diligence, to give oneself most earnestly
  • The Rabbi's definition of this is that "we are not to study Torah half-way"
  • And furthermore, if we study Torah half-way, it is as if we don't study Torah at all
  • It is as we engage in the Torah - fully and earnestly with our heart - that we engage in a relationship with G-D and with each another ... it is anything but the head, but it is about the heart!

"We are to be doers of Torah, not just to study it with no application."

A talmid is one who engages with The torah with his heart, not in terms of academics ~                              The Torah is the academics of the heart and this is the path for real and genuine discipleship.

You may wonder how apparently different words can be related to one another?
