Day 4 Devotional - Failure Is Not Fatal

Please take a moment to read 2nd Samuel 11 & 12 before reading this devotional. Thank you.

Did you read it? Good! Let’s move forward.

I fail at things. If you asked my wife, she would say that I fail at most things. Just kidding. My most recent failure happened at work (I’m bivocational). I signed up for some training that would put me in a different position. I knew that this training was going to be challenging for me. It was tough. I worked really hard to achieve their standards and pass this training. In the end, I did not pass. As a matter of fact, I got pushed back to where I had started when I first started with this job. That failure hurt because I had tried really hard and felt like I was doing a good job. Even though it hurts, I am thankful that I get to try again.

Two simple facts about failures:

  1. They suck. No one has ever said, “Man I cannot wait until I fail!” (Unless you are doing a YouTube video.)
  2. You can always try again.

Most failures that we will face in 2019 will not be as big as the one King David faced. If you took the time to read the two chapters I mentioned at the beginning of this devotional—you know that King David was in a place he should have not been, had seen a woman that he should have not seen, did something with that woman that he should have not done, and eventually killed her husband to cover it up!

That was the quick version. Please go back and read the full story to understand the details of what exactly happened.

In 2nd Samuel 12 we see that God sent a prophet (Nathan) to confront David. Nathan did this by simply sharing a story with David—a story that was ultimately used to call David out about his sins. David wept and confessed his sins to Nathan and to God:

Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.” ~2 Samuel 12:13 (NLT)

Like I said previously, our failures in 2019 may not be as big or as consequential as King David’s—and even if they are—what I want you to know is that failure is not fatal.

Nathan said to David, “You won’t die for this sin.”
Did he fail? Yes.
Was it fatal? No.

Go into 2019 not afraid to fail!

THE DATES
We began the fast last night at 10pm (CST) and will end at 10pm on January 10th.

FOCUS
This Daniel Fast is a spiritual discipline designed to better connect us with God as we take 10 days to deepen our relationship with Him and center ourselves around what He is going to do in RockChurch and in our lives during 2019. This will be a challenging process, but we look forward to hearing from Jesus and experiencing Him with intensity during this time of fasting and prayer.

PRAYER
Don't forget to PRAY during your fast as prayer is the key! Without it, the fast is just a diet.

Please email us prayer requests at info@rcpeoria.org.

MENU
The Daniel Fast is a partial fast, which means that we will eliminate some common things from our daily diet, but will have generous options available. We will focus on eating fruits and vegetables.

FOODS TO EAT
Whole grains (brown rice, oats, barley), legumes, fruits, vegetables, honey, liquids (water, soy milk, herbal tea, natural fruit juice). Some people choose to drink coffee (because it's a bean) so we recommend decaf if you choose to do that.

FOODS TO AVOID
Meat, poultry, fish, fried foods, caffeine, carbonated beverages, foods containing preservatives or additives, refined sugar or sugar substitutes, white flour, margarine, shortening, high fat products, breads, dairy (milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc.)

ADDITIONAL IDEAS
If you cannot eat fruits and vegetables for 10 days, maybe you can sacrifice another area of your life? Here are some ideas: social media, soda, Starbucks, Netflix
