Dear friends of FAYM

Our christmas recital for the 2018/19 school year was held on December 8 at the East Las Vegas Community Center. This year’s beginning students had the pleasure to take the stage for the first time; they did a great job. The audience was really excited for them.

We had some of the parents and siblings of the students perform alongside our Mariachi Estrellas de FAYM.

Our FAYM parents work together to assure that our program had a great Christmas recital. They got together and organized a great meal for everyone to enjoy after the recital.

Looking forward to the New Year,

Claudia Rivera, President

Golden Violins

FAYM has been teaching our youth to play the violin for 11 years.  In this time we occasionally run across a student that seldom misses class, always comes to class prepared, and based on the way they play the violin, they have practiced on a regular basis at home.  In order to reward their commitment to learning, we developed the Golden Violin Program.  This is set up so that a student can earn a better quality violin than the standard low cost beginner instruments we loan our students.  There is a process including writing an essay as to why they feel they have earned the Golden Violin, volunteer hours helping less experienced students, assisting teachers, and demonstrating their musical proficiency by auditioning in front of a panel consisting of Mr. Tim Thomas, our Project Coordinator, Mr. Hal Weller, Founder of FAYM and myself, Arturo Ochoa, Co-Founder of FAYM.  The audition is the final step and if they pass the audition, their beginning instrument is replaced with a violin that has a retail of over a thousand dollars!

Additionally, if they remain with FAYM and continue their commitment to learning, after two years the Golden Violin becomes the property of the student!  For a more detailed explanation of the process, check our website

During our December Recital it was our pleasure to present a Golden Violin to Gema Aguirre.  In her interview she describes how she felt when she finally got to hold her Golden Violin in her own hands. At this time I would like to express my gratitude to Ms. Elaine Myers for making this presentation of a Golden Violin possible.  The instrument Gema Aguirre received and several others were a donation to FAYM made by Ms. Myers!  Because of her generous donation, many youngsters will have the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument as they develop their musical talent.

THANK YOU ELAINE MYERS!

Gema Yathzil Mora-Aguirre

What is your name?  Gema Yathzil Mora-Aguirre

What grade are you in?  7th grade

Which school do you go to?  K O Knudson

What college do you plan on attending? Royal College of Music or UCLA

What are you planning on majoring in? Medicine or music (Mariachi)

When did you earn your Golden Violin?  I earned it December on 8, 2018.

When you first played it, could you hear a difference in the sound of your Golden Violin compared to the violin you previously had?  What was the difference?  I did hear a difference, a big one. My Golden Violin has a nice, loud, deep smooth sound unlike my other violin which sounded like a little toy.

How did you feel when the Golden Violin was placed in your hands?    I felt super happy that I was able to achieve my goal and accomplish one of my many dreams.

What made you work for and apply for the Golden Violin?  I just felt a very strong need to earn it. After I saw many other students earn their violin I thought, if they could do it so could I.

What was the most challenging part for you to earn the Golden Violin? The most challenging part would be looking for time to practice. At first I couldn’t find any time to practice but then, I organized myself and found enough time to practice.

Was it worth all the time and effort you put into this?  It was so worth putting a lot of effort and time because I was able to do what I like.

Do you have any advice you want to offer our other FAYM students that are thinking of applying for their Golden Violin?  They should totally go for it. If that’s their dream or their goal they should absolutely try their best to accomplish that dream.

Is there anything else you would like to say to our FAYM Family?  I am so glad FAYM was started. This foundation gave many opportunities to those families who aren’t able to afford an instrument plus the private lessons. FAYM had helped many kids, like me, accomplish their dreams and has taught them all a lot about music. I’m always grateful for opportunities like these.

Which do you prefer to play?  I enjoy playing vehuela more.

When and how you became a teacher with FAYM?  I became a teacher with FAYM.

How long have you been teaching music?  This is my first year that I’m actually teaching music.

How did you get started?  FAYM as a volunteer.

Where are you currently teaching?  FAYM is the only place I teach.

Tell us about an adult who inspired you to pursuit music during your childhood?  I was never inspired by any one person, but by many as they performed.

What class(es) do you teach for FAYM?  In FAYM  I teach guitar classes.

What are you working on with our students this semester?  We are working on new songs and the style of with mariachi is played.

What qualities or skills do you want your students to leave your class with at the end of the year?  I would like for my students to leave as better musicians and with discipline, because what they do reflects on all of musicians.

Do You Know Parent Yohara Delgado?

What's your name?  I am Yohara Delgado.

How many children do you have in FAYM?  What groups are they in?  I have a daughter in FAYM in level 1 with Miss Chun

How did you find out about FAYM?  I found out on Facebook.

How long have you been with us?  We tried to get in when she was 3 years old but, this is our first year.

How did you feel when you first saw your daughter with a violin in her hands?  The feeling I experienced when I saw my daughter with a violin for the first time was joy.

How did it feel to see and hear your daughter play in public her first time?  Looking at my daughter for the first time playing the violin in public is an inexplicable feeling of joy and hope.  What I am sure is that God will be with her and if she tries, she will achieve all her goals.

Was your daughter happy to get her violin?  She was super excited to at last achieve her dream.

Is your daughter enjoying learning to play the violin?  Carla is enjoying going to violin classes and she even reminds me on days she has violin class.

Is bringing your daughter to us twice a week worth your time?  I enjoy waiting for her while she is in class.  I see how she pays attention and how she strives to get ahead.

Has there been a problem bringing your daughter to our classes?  I bring her to class twice a week.  It is time I give to my daughter to learn a beautiful instrument.

Have you seen any changes in your daughter since she started playing the violin?  My daughter has had great changes.   I know that she has not yet learned the notes as well as she would like but already she practices at home and is proving that she is putting forth lots of effort.

Do you think other parents should take their children to music classes like ours?  Of course.  Many times I recommend this foundation because it is a non-profit whose only interest is to provide musical knowledge to children who have these inclinations and they do it from the heart.  This is very important.

If FAYM was not here, would your daughter be involved in music classes?  If FAYM was not here, I do not think my daughter would be so involved with the violin.

This interview will be in our next Newsletter.  Is there anything else you'd like to say to our FAYM family?  It is a foundation that I admire and respect a lot for what they do for the youth.  As a mother I am proud that my daughter is part of this foundation and I myself am willing to do whatever I can to support the foundation.  As a mother, I feel I am a very blessed to be a part of you.
