Process Translated

Manny Wilkins, the quarterback for the Arizona State University Sun Devils is busy and our shoot date keeps moving around as his schedule does too. We're in Tempe in July. It's pushing 112 degrees. We cast real ASU students and staff to work as models for our print shoot for the ASU Foundation.

This intersection of real people and commercial photography is a sweet spot for us. We are very good at photographing real people in settings that elevate a story.

Current students and a few people from the communication office are the extras for our shoot. No one knows each other all that well and no one has a relationship with Manny Wilkins. To keep the energy light and filled with emotion we're playing improv games and offering very loose direction. We keep the lighting mobile, with a mix of available light, big diffused sources and smaller portable, harder, lights. As everyone is laughing and getting lost in the emotion and connection we move though the scene documenting it as we go.

Here's a photo of Johnny Jaffe, bad ass digital tech, and Manny talking gear on set.
