As Notre Dame prepares to kick with Clemson later today in Arlington, USA Today's Schroeder writes on why the Fighting Irish are still a key piece of the sport's fabric. ND AD Swarbrick on his department's "polarizing" brand, "I hope so. It’s part of the relevance, right? It’s part of the brand. No one’s neutral about Notre Dame." Swarbrick also continues to add context to his CFP seat, "I see my role as a little bit of Switzerland and hope I can play that role in some productive way. Conferences have an awful lot going on, a lot of dynamics to be concerned about. And if I can help facilitate those discussions or be a sounding board, I’m happy to do it." Former SEC Commish & industry kingpin Kramer: "College football in every respect, moreso than the pros or anything else, has a flavor of tradition in it. And that flavor of tradition has always included Notre Dame. Whether you want it or not, it’s a factor that’s there and always has been. And as a result in some manner or way, regardless of what the structure is, there will be an acknowledgment of that tradition." (link)
Clemson FB HC Swinney says Tigers AD Radakovich is running point on potential legal remedies to the three banned substance test results that will keep three student-athletes out of, at minimum, today's CFP semi against Notre Dame. Swinney: "They have representation. Obviously, the timing of it is not very good for this game. If we were fortunate to be able to win the game, they’ll do everything they can to see if there’s an opportunity for next week if that were possible." (link)
Latest perspective from Conference USA Commish MacLeod on her league's MBB late-season scheduling strategy, "We struggle getting top 50 and top 100 games in the non-conference, and when we do get them, they're usually on the road or at neutral sites. We just wanted to make sure we're giving our top teams the opportunity to play as many good games as they can. […] We're not going to try something just because it's crazy and new, but we think it has a chance to make us better and give us more opportunities." Thoughts from ESPN MBB bracketologist Lunardi: "It can't hurt to try and do everything in your power to make sure your best teams have an opportunity for the highest quality wins that they can get and similarly avoid the bad loss that can be a pothole. [...] a lot of nerds like me are watching (if it works)." Guess that makes us all nerds. (link)
Former Xavier MBB stand-out & current Historical Basketball League COO West says virtually 100% of student-athletes heading to the NBA are ill prepared for what they face once they're a professional. West points to a lack of dialogue between student-athletes & current pros to paint a real picture of what life is like in the league, "the inner workings of an NBA locker room, how you have to handle yourself around people who have children, men that have wives & families to feed." West also believes one reason the NBA continues to have an age limit is that straight-from-high-school kids will be that much more unprepared than current collegiate student-athletes. "You don't have lawyers who don't learn from other lawyers. You don't have doctors who don't learn from other doctors." (link)
The Athletic's Sammon takes a look at the process notable attorney Mars undertook to get Ole Miss-to-Florida FB transfer student-athlete Jefferson eligible. Two interesting strategy nuggets: 1) "Part of Mars’ strategy at the beginning included purposely leading with (Ole Miss-to-Michigan transfer) Patterson because of the high-profile situation that existed at Michigan with Jim Harbaugh and rarely involving Jefferson in conversations about the overall process."; and, 2) "Mars became a recognizable name, the driving force behind players’ transfers. Prior to Mars, waiver requests were always handled quietly behind the scenes. The NCAA didn’t talk about it. Teams didn’t, either. Mars was able to disrupt a traditionally private process that wasn’t known for transparency." Mars says he was impressed with how thoroughly the SEC looked into the situation, points to his representation of former Ole Miss/Arkansas HC Nutt as a learning experience, "the real victims here, the targeted victims, was student-athletes and parents." (link)
The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner plays the what-if game, wonders what the Pac-12 would look & feel like if Commish Scott were to have pulled off winning Texas & Oklahoma away from the Big 12 back in 2011. Thinks the most reasonable solution to the 14-school league would have been to split USC & UCLA into north & south divisions, respectively, "giving all members direct access to Southern California." Also, "Imagine Scott sitting down to negotiate a new media rights deal with Fox or ESPN (or Amazon or Facebook) and having as leverage not one but two of college football’s greatest brands, in addition to (every other year) the rights to the Red River Rivalry." (link)

UConn brass have asked a federal judge to dismiss claims by former MBB HC Ollie on a number of different grounds, including "the former coach's lawyer never notified the school that he planned to bring the complaint despite a conference call between the sides minutes before the motion was filed." The university's push was part of oral arguments in the case yesterday with another hearing set for the 25th of next month. UConn also continues to refuse to waive a clause in the school's collective bargaining agreement with the union that represented Ollie during his employment. (link)
As the full NFL HC hiring season nears, a source close to league ownership meetings earlier this month says owners were reminded that if they want to go after a college HC, the coach's respective AD must be contacted first. But, here's the kicker, "The teams were told that, if permission is denied, the pursuit must end." More from the source to NBC Sports' Florio, "I’m guessing that part of leagues concern is NFL/NCAA relationship. They are always afraid that colleges will make our lives more difficult and that the draft would be affected." All this is well & good, but would it ever really keep a college HC from making the jump? Doubtful. (link)
Stadium's Goodman continues his 'Chain of Command' series & the Horizon is up next. Coaches from around the league voted on the best & worst HC opportunities based on eight different variable. Results: Wright State, UIC, Oakland, Northern Kentucky, UW-Milwaukee, Cleveland State, UW-Green Bay, Detroit, IUPUI, Youngstown State. Biggest single outlier is IUPUI's vote as #1 for "Selling Pros," but overall finish as only the 9th best job. (link)
The hotly contested Kentucky-Louisville MBB rivalry fires back up today, but new Cards' HC Mack is doing things a bit differently than his predecessor. For one, Mack takes one or more of his kids on a number of recruiting or game road trips & commonly chronicles the travels via social media. Mack: "There's a lot of idle time when you go to a Peach Jam [a high-profile summer recruiting event], when you're driving from the gym back to the hotel, you're landing, going to the hotel, it's 9:30, and you're probably gonna grab something to eat late when you shouldn't. And no disrespect to my fellow coaches because they're awesome, I'd rather get some chicken wings with my kid." Lots more. (link)
While your department & every other is likely spending lots more on digital marketing than it did just a few years ago, some leaders across the sports industry still subscribe to the power of billboards. Rutgers Asst. AD for Marketing Roselli on the Scarlet Knights being part of the College FB 150th anniversary outdoor campaign, "The way we’re going to measure it is did we get any media attention out of it? If we do, we’re aware that some of it might come with a little tone of snark. But at the end of the day, if they’re talking about Rutgers football, it’s a win for us." Las Vegas Golden Knights CMO Killingsworth: "I think billboards definitely supplement our overall media mix and are great tools to showcase your brand. When combined with a more refined digital and content strategy, they help round out our overall market presence." (link)
Looks like Amazon is still pushing to pry the YES Network away from Disney's 22 regional sports networks package that's on the block. Now Sinclair has joined Amazon to provide more might. Disney is reportedly looking for $5B to $6B for its 80% share of the outlet. (link)
Navalent's Carucci for HBR: "To Retain New Hires, Spend More Time Onboarding Them." Points to the necessity of onboarding as 20% of staff turnover comes within the first 45 days of employment. Three tiers: 1) Organization Onboarding: a) Teach them how things work; and, b) Help them assimilate; 2) Technical Onboarding: a) Define what good looks like; b) Set up early wins; and, 3) Social Onboarding: a) Build a sense of community. "Organizations with standardized onboarding process experience 62% greater new hire productivity, along with 50% greater new hire retention." (link)

Grambling AD Ponton Q&As with KTBS on a handful of items. On his role as both AD & VP for Student Affairs, "My priority now is athletics. This is not like a split job. I want to make sure that that's emphasized is that my priority is athletics at this time. I retain the title of VP for Student Affairs. Athletics was brought under that umbrella of Student Affairs and I will be the chief athletic administrator in that diagram." Biggest challenge? "Stability. You know, being is this situation because we've had so much instability over the last few years as far as presidents are concerned, athletic directors are concerned, so being in the area that, first of all, I've been here for so long and know the area, know the culture, stability is going to be huge." (link)
"There is no evidence of discrimination against female athletes. In recent years, FAU complied with ... Title IX guidelines by demonstrating a history and continuing practice of program expansion. FAU continually strives to provide equitable opportunities for all of its male and female student-athletes." That's the latest from Florida Atlantic to the Palm Beach Post as the newspaper continues to dig in on the Owls' Title IX compliance. FAU has claimed clerical errors led to misreporting of opportunities for females, but three attorneys who review the situation all question the behind-the-scenes process undertaken by the university. More, including emails exchanged between university Prez Kelly, AD White & other senior leaders, plus the hiring of Baker Donelson - at $380 per hour - to aid in the process. (link)
UCF DC/former Miami (FL) HC Shannon is not a fan of the trend of FB student-athletes sitting out bowl games ahead of the NFL Draft. Shannon: "My opinion, it probably will fester more and more in college. And then now the NFL is going to have to make a decision. If you draft a young man that leaves early and now you're not a playoff team, that young man [is] going to say, 'I'm not going to play.' Same situation. Right, wrong or indifferent. ... If a team is 6-9, no chance of them making the playoffs, are they going to play or are they going to tank it? Especially if you're on the last year of your contract, option year. ... In recruiting, it's the same thing. You see things in recruiting and you say, 'Oh, I can change him. Oh, I can change him.' If the guy's been doing that for 18 years, there's nothing you can change about him." (link)
Nothing wrong with a little journalist v. journalist beef. Yesterday, Awful Announcing took to Twitter to criticize ESPN, "The fact that ESPN Events was the entity behind the Servpro First Responder Bowl was probably a major reason why the game was canceled because of poor weather." To which ESPN Senior Director of PR for College Sports Potts responded, "No actual reporting took place during the writing of this ‘hot take’ ... or else it’d have mentioned the violent weather lasted to midnight and airports closed and that we’re giving refunds to ticket holders." (link)
Also Noticed: Yesterday's MBB games at North Dakota (vs Purdue Fort Wayne) and North Dakota State (vs. South Dakota) were postponed until this evening due to adverse weather conditions. (link); Washington State AD Chun left a gift package of "some things that bring us pride" for Iowa State AD Pollard ahead of their bowl matchup yesterday. Is this a common thing? (link); The Hawaii Bowl is looking at a six-year extension. (link); Northeastern's Matthews Arena gets its new centerhung, two ribbon displays and audio system from Daktronics. (link); This year's Pinstripe Bowl between Miami (FL) and Wisconsin delivered 3.79M viewers on ESPN, down 5% from last year, but still the largest audience for a bowl game this year so far. The Texas Bowl registered 3.34M, the least watched edition in nine years. The Independence Bowl was down 18% at 1.8M, the Cactus Bowl at 2.7M, down 17%, and the Detroit Bowl jumped 6% from last year at 2.69M. (link); Michigan MBB HC Beilein's son, Patrick, has signed with Priority Sports and Entertainment (Chicago). The younger Beilein is currently the HC at Le Moyne (DII). (link); Another carriage fight, this one between Tribune & Spectrum, again with sports as the carrot & stick. (link)
