Michael Connor urged members to view Richard Baker’s coins in the latest CNG e-sale. Mark Westerline said he was unhappy with the Club collecting dues while having an ever-accumulating treasury. There was some discussion of the topic later in the meeting but this was after Mark left and no motions were proposed. David Michaels reviewed the upcoming Triton XXII Auction and handed out nifty CNG pens as well as copies of the gorgeous, 458 page Triton XXII catalog.

Presentation.

Randy Butler gave the feature presentation SHOWDOWN AT PHARSALUS, 48 BCE. Randy covered the background to the battle, the battle site, the coins of the major players on both sides, the battle itself, and the aftermath. As always, Randy gave an outstanding presentation that was deeply appreciated by the audience. For followup reading, Randy recommended these books on the topic: Pharsalus 48 BC: Caesar and Pompey – Clash of the Titans from Osprey Books; The History and Coinage of the Roman Imperators by David R. Sear; Roman Republican Moneyers and Their Coins, 63-49 BC by Michael Harlan; and, Colleen McCullough’s series of informative and entertaining fictional accounts of the period.

Post-Meeting Update on Greek Coins and Their Values.

A possible group purchase of the new Spink edition of Greek Coins and Their Values: Western Europe and North Africa: Coins of Spain, Gaul, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia and North Africa by Italo Vecchi was floated at the November meeting. We have now secured a couple of quotes and should be able to offer the book to meeting attendees at a 25% discount depending on the number of copies we order. The book's release date has been delayed because Italo Vecchi has been unwell so there is more time for members to sign up. We will have a sign up sheet at the January meeting. If you are interested but won't be at the next meeting please email me so that you are added to the group purchase list.
