Bicester Heritage –Sunday Scramble 6th January 2019
A bright crisp winter morning brought in a record number of over 7,000 visitors to Sunday Scramble on the 6th January. The MGF Register organised our space allocation for the MG Car Club and the Club was one of the largest groups there. As well as meeting with Car Club members the delight is in walking round, seeing the massive range of cars of all ages and chatting to some of the owners.

Many of the businesses on site had their premises opened up so that we could see the work that was going on. Despite the numbers the site is so large that it does not get too crowded – though the queues for bacon butties were rather long. The next Scramble will be on Drive It Day the 28th April. Look out for the Club discount which will be announced in February and come and join us if you can.

Anyway, by introduction, I have had the pleasure to lead many a classic MGA/MGB part or all 155000miles around the World in our cars.
We refer to ourselves as Aussie Adventurers as, to date, only Aussies have joined me in my travels😂
Below is my blurb and wondered if you would mind helping us “encourage” a few Brits to join us?

Drive your MGB to Base Camp, Mt Everest in 2020
By way of introduction, Ross Letten and I and our wives have driven our classic MGs around the world – literally – and now wish to conquer Base Camp Mt Everest. Previous trips include Beijing to London, Cape to Cairo, Pan-American Highway and Trans-Canada. All have been self-organised to keep costs to sensible levels without stinting on best accommodation available.
Experience has shown us that the optimum size for such a group is between four and six classic MGs. Further, it is useful if the cars are sufficiently similar so that they share spare parts and can be prepared to be rugged. In other words, we are looking for between two and four MGA or MGB owners to join us. Could you be one of them?
At this stage, we believe we will be the "First MGs to Conquer Mt Everest Base Camp".
The trip will start in Bangkok, Thailand in April 2020 and will visit attractions, many being UNESCO World Heritage sites, in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, en route to meeting our personal guide in southern China.
In China and Tibet, we will visit such sites as Dali (Chongcheng pagodas and Erhai Lake), Lijiang (UNESCO World Heritage site), Tiger Leaping Gorge (third deepest gorge on earth), Zuogong (pass of the 72 curves to Ranwu Lake at 4,000 metres), Nyintri (Switzerland of the East), Lhasa (Capital of Tibet), Tsedang (first palace built in Tibet) and then Everest Base Camp!
For obvious reasons, it’s important to realise that this offer is open to MG Adventurers who can work on their own cars and who don’t mind chipping in to assist where needed. Affable types with well-prepared cars would be most welcome!

UK MOT Exemption News
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) has issued advice after it emerged that some police are stopping some owners of classic cars more than 40 years old for appearing not to have a valid MOT, which it fears is due to official records on these vehicles not making the exemption clear. The FBHVC advice is encouraging owners of classics to carry with them a copy of a recent letter from the Department for Transport (DfT) in case they are stopped by police officers unaware of the VED exemption changes for classics more than 40 years old.
The Federation has argued that the DVLA process for enabling the declaration of a vehicle as "not having undergone substantial change in the technical characteristics of its main components" at the time of re-licensing, was one which could put drivers at risk of bureaucratic misunderstanding and leave them at risk from ill-briefed policemen. In a NEWS item posted on the FBHVC website says "we became aware that a real example that had arisen and that the driver of a historic vehicle had received a Notice of Prosecution. The Federation urgently sought clarification of the position from the Department for Transport. We are glad to confirm that they responded promptly and positively and have provided us with the statement we copy here, which we think sets out the position clearly and succinctly and will be of real use to our members. It may be that some members who have concerns about this will wish to carry a copy of the DfT statement in their vehicle".

MGB: UBX 753L
Lois is hoping for news of her father’s car which he restored in the 1990’s. It was blue but is now believed to be red. If you know of this car Lois would be delighted to hear from you.
MGB: 3621 MG (formerly RUD 224T ?)
Some MGB’s were developed by the Abingdon factory for testing with ‘O’ series engines. They never went into production and the engines were removed from the development cars and the bodies sold on when the project was dropped. Peter has recently bought one of these cars and is trying to trace its history:
‘The car is now registered 3621 MG and has the Vehicle Number GHN5UL 473176G. It is apparently one of the Factory development O-Series shells (originally registered RUD 224T ? and to American spec) converted to a V8 by Beer of Houghton in 1982 for Barry Boyd who has unfortunately recently passed away. It seems to have been taken off the road in 1985 and not run since. It appears to have had 3 keepers prior to Barry who I am trying to trace (presumably the MG Plant would have been the first). Many thanks for any help you may be able to give. Peter’

MGB: XPP 226J
This MGB was driven by the actress Jennifer Daniel in the final episode of the TV series ‘Public Eye’ filmed in 1974 and first broadcast in 1975. The car is listed as still on the road by the DVLA. We wonder if the current owner knows of its brief starring role. If you know of this car please do get in touch.
