Dear Guildies,

I hope you all had a wonderful month full of celebrations with friends and family. 2019 is just around the corner and sure to be fulfilling and creative!

This month's meeting will feature the Election Committee's presentation of 2019 Board Candidates, sign-up for Michelle Wilkie's April 6th class, and a presentation on "How to Get Out of a Creative Rut". You don't want to miss it!

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the newsletter, please email me. I would also love to hear of any quilty news or ideas for content you'd like to share. Constructive feedback is always welcome.

Meeting Reminders
  • Wednesday, January 2nd is our guild meeting at The Sewing Studio 10-12. Parking is once again permitted at the gas station next door when The Sewing Studio lot is full.
  • Bring your Block Lotto block(s). Each block made earns you one ticket in the raffle of ALL blocks. The more blocks you make, the better your chance of winning! Here is the current block's details.
  • Bring your finished projects for Show and Tell.  
  • Remember to bring you Bee Blocks for your Bee Groups.
  • All books checked out from the guild library need to be returned by Wednesday's meeting. If you checked out a book but will not attend the meeting, you need to make arrangements to give the book to someone who will. Check the link on our blog to see what books are in our inventory and to add books to the ongoing wish list.
  • Members receive a 15% discount at The Sewing Studio on guild meeting days and a 10% discount on non-meeting days.
  • Monday, January 7th is the Maitland Sew Day. Saturday, January 26th (10am - 1:30pm) is the Dr. Phillips Sew Day. Saturday, January 26th (9am - 3pm) is the Oviedo Library Sew Day. 
  • Block of the Month (current and past) instructions, meeting minutes, Calendar dates, and more can be found on the guild blog.

Community Outreach

Well so many things we’ve started are completed!  Thank you all for your support and generosity this year.  Just about everything has been wrapped up; we still can make placemats and quilts for the few things on the calendar. 

Beth sent a few quilts for the people who lost everything in those horrible California fires last month. 

The 2019 QuiltCon Quilt is ready to be mailed to the Modern Quilt Guild for display at 2019 QuiltCon.  A special thank you to Kathy Aber and Alissa Lapinsky and everyone who made blocks for this quilt.   

Please continue to make those placemats for Meals on Wheels.  We have had such a wonderful response, keep them coming to dress up someone’s dinner table.

What do we need?

Assistance with the Trunk Show
If you would like to join us and assist with the show, we will need about 5 people to help with loading and unloading and displaying the quilts. 
 
Quilts to display
If you have a favorite quilt that you would be willing include in the trunk show get it to Marge Cree or Kathy Aber by the February meeting. Please have your name on it with a brief description of why and how you created it. Your name will ensure you get it back. Also, if you have a quilt in the Maitland Library exhibit and would let us include it in the trunk show, please let us know.  We will get it back to you after the trunk show. 

Quilts to donate
If you have made a charity quilt and would like to donate to the residents have that to Marge or Kathy by the February meeting if you haven’t already done so. Depending on how many we receive will dictate how we will distribute. If we have enough for each resident attending, we will give them out. If not, we will hold a raffle to give away.

Local Events
  • American Quilter’s Society Celebrates AQS QuiltWeek® - Daytona Beach, Florida 2019. For more information about the American Quilter’s Society, please visit http://www.americanquilter.com or call 270-898-7903.
  • Showcase of Quilts 2019 in The Villages, Florida, on Friday, January 25th(from 9-5) and Saturday, 26th (from 9-4). Due to the growth and popularity of our quilt show, it will now be located at 2 of the recreation centers here in The Villages, Florida.
  • Rohan Recreation Center at 850 Kristine Way
  • SeaBreeze Recreation Center at 2384 Buena Vista Blvd.

The team has been working tirelessly on this show for two years.  You will be amazed at the quality of the quilts created by members of the Quilt Guild of The Villages from beginners to very experienced quilters.  Our quilters like to push their creativity to the max and they have really outdone themselves this year.  Please come and be prepared to be INSPIRED!

Featured at our show:

  • A Display of about 300 quilts and 30 vendors can be found between the 2 locations. 
  • Our Boutique offers handmade items such as purses, table toppers, placemats, quilts plus many more unique items available for purchase. 
  • The Gift Basket Auction is another favorite part of the show – take a chance on many fun-filled baskets! 
  • The Silent Auction always draws a crowd.  Items are hand-made by our members and donated to the auction. Proceeds go back to our chapters to be used on charity projects and to the Christian Care Center, an outreach center located in Leesburg, FL.
  • You will want to purchase a chance to win our Charity Quilt, made by the Big Cypress chapter of our guild. It is beautiful. Proceeds from this quilt will be donated to E-Nini-Hassee, an outdoor therapeutic school for girls, located in Floral City, Florida.
  • Evolution of quilting thru time exhibit which we are sure you will find very interesting.
  • One of our local 4-H clubs has been invited to display some of their quilts. It is so important to inspire and support today’s youth in the art of quilting.
  • You can park your car at either of the rec centers or at the Soaring Eagle Softball Complex where you can catch one of our golf cart shuttles to Rohan Rec Center. 

There will also be free shuttle buses running between the 2 rec centers – What’s better than door to door service! Shuttle buses will run continuously on Friday from 10 – 5:30 and Saturday from 10 – 4:30. Please contact Jane at JaneWnuk@gmail.com for information about advance tickets and discounts for groups of 25 or more.

with Kathy Aber

How long have you been quilting? How did you learn? When/why did you join OMQG?

I've always been interested in all kinds of needlework and come from several generations of quilters. Both of my grandmothers were quilters. I have a quilt my mother made in high school with a boyfriend. My father's sister also quilted as did my mother-in-law. I learned to sew with Home Ec in high school but was a very impatient sewer. I did, however, make my wedding dress and maid of honors' dress and quite a few dresses for work back in my 20s. I took my first quilting class in Chicago in the 70s from a woman named Yvette; it included all aspects of piecing, appliqué and quilting by hand. I inherited all the quilts from my mother's family and many squares made in the 30s and 40s. I made my first quilt, hand-pieced and hand-quilted, for my daughter's bed when she was about 10 from Sunbonnet Sue squares my grandmother made and left to me. It's on the bed in my grandkids play/bedroom. I still have a hand-pieced, 1-inch hex grandmother's flower garden quilt top that needs to be hand quilted. When we first moved to Florida 35 years ago, I took a hand-applique class with a friend at a shop in Lakeland, that's still a UFO. My aunt started making a pattern she saw in the Kansas City Star called Outlaw Rabbits for her grandchildren and when my 3 grandchildren came along (11 years ago), I decided to make the same quilt for them. The neat part of that was that she had my dad draw the bunny pattern. My quilting lapsed until a friend put a group together at my church. Each month she brought a new project and I learned the ins and outs of machine piecing and quilting small projects. That was about 7 years ago.  I joined the OMQG in Sept. 2016 after the church quilting group and another group I had found disbanded. Sarah Lauzon was the link. She had made a quilt from the blocks of the month as a thank-you gift for her son's teachers at my church's Child Development Center. I inquired about the group and joined in the midst of the Quilts for Pulse project. The guild was so welcoming and impressive, it was amazing to be part of such a generous, hardworking group.



What machine(s) do you drive?

My main machine is a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 8900 QCP. I have a smaller Janome to travel with and the Singer that I made my wedding dress with.

What and/or who inspires you?

I'm inspired by the skill, precision, creativity and artistry of so many quilters when I see the displays at AQS or Quiltcon. Since I've tried hand quilting, it's hard to imagine the patience and time that has gone into those works and the creativity inspired by free motion quilters. 



What is your most treasured (sewing related) possession?

My most treasured sewing-related possession? Probably a child's Singer Sewing Machine that I made some doll clothes on as a child; however, the needle was lost and I've tried twice to purchase a replacement and it doesn't fit. I also treasure a old sewing cabinet and spinning wheel that I inherited from my grandmother. 



Do you sew with your shoes on or off?

I sew with my shoes on.



What is your favorite thing you’ve made to date?

My favorite thing I've made to date is probably my Dresden plate Christmas tree skirt. It took years for me to finish it but each year I love to lay it under my tree. 




What is your next sewing adventure?

I have a wall-hanging pattern book of stained glass window designs from Frank Lloyd Wright houses. I've tried to make one and failed and would like to master that.  

Tell us a little-known fact about yourself.

A little know fact — I applied to be an FBI agent.

What is your motto?

Motto: Achieving begins with believing.
