We finally have some movement on the Learfield-IMG College deal, though to what end is not quite known yet. SBJ's Smith: "IMG College all company call scheduled for tomorrow. Details of merger with Learfield expected to be revealed. Terms and divestitures could be part of it. Deal originally signed October 2017. DOJ review is thought to be complete." (link); SB Nation Senior Writer Godfrey: "I’ve been told the long-gestating IMG/Learfield merger confirmation will be announced tomorrow." (link)
Overnight, The Athletic's Davis confirms UCLA AD Guerrero will make a MBB HC change today. No indication yet on who will serve as Interim HC. (link); Bruins Nation's Piechowski goes on to note that Guerrero may be planning on retiring at the end of 2019. Piechowski sums his position up, writing: "The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball program has sunk so low that it requires either an immediate fix or a fix at the end of this season. Replacing Dan Guerrero as Athletic Director is something that Bruin fans will probably have to wait longer for." (link)
The carousel shifted into another gear in Coral Gables yesterday. Just hours after Miami (FL) FB HC Richt announced his retirement from coaching, the school announced Temple HC Diaz would return to the Canes. UM AD James confirmed he was surprised by Richt's departure, but added: "I guess what I would say in this room, again, it’s no secret, we had to figure out how to get better on offense and I think there’s some obvious things that we need to do on that front, and Mark and I spoke in great detail about what we could do to better our position offensively in the future. ... I know that he and Katharyn gave their all when they returned to Coral Gables three years ago. We are proud of the many accomplishments of his team, their top 10 rankings, their graduates and restoring excitement in Canes football." Diaz, who served as DC under Richt the past three seasons before taking the Owls' job earlier this month, said he had no idea this opportunity would present itself but expressed excitement about returning "home." Temple AD Kraft expressed disappointment at Diaz's sudden decision but wished him well. Kraft added: "We have already launched a national search for a new head football coach and I am confident that we will bring yet another outstanding head coach to North Broad Street." (link, link); With the departures of former HCs Collins & Diaz, Temple will bank $6.5M in the process. (link)
Pac-12 Commish Scott sat with AthleticDirectorU to cover ground on the importance of building consensus, "not necessarily unanimity," and addressing criticisms that come with being a visible leader. The conversation also includes thoughts on how he handles criticism & the future of media rights. Scott: "In these types of very visible roles, you get more credit than you deserve at times and you get more blame than you deserve at times. You have to understand it goes with the territory. […] There is an arms race in college athletics and success is sometimes measured in short and in relative terms. But we've got a long-term strategy regarding success in the media rights market." SBJ's Ourand reports Verizon and Disney have reached a "broad-based distribution agreement." While specifics of the deal have yet to be finalized, one component, according to Ourand, appears to be the inclusion of the ACC Network as part of Disney's carriage deal: "I expect (the) ACC Network to wind up with expanded basic carriage on Verizon when it launches in August." UCF Prez Whittaker yesterday posited that CFP expansion will happen "long before" the current contract expires in 2026, adding: "I think it will happen within the next year or two. Just listening to the dialogue right now among presidents and commissioners -- and you’re starting to hear it among ESPN management and talent -- I think the ball is over the mountain and starting to roll downhill." Whittaker also submits that there is no need to take legal action due to the seeming inevitability of expansion: "You need to have two groups on board -- commissioners and conference presidents -- and we’re starting to see that. ... You’re starting to see some of the power conferences that haven’t participated a lot in the playoffs open to the idea of trying something different.” (link)
The Capital One Orange Bowl did a 10.4 overnight rating (down 17% year-over-year), while the Goodyear Cotton Bowl pulled a 10.3 (-30%). Both figures account for ESPN's MegaCast offering and rank the pair of games among the top six highest-rated cable presentations of 2018 ("a top six which features all five CFP games that were played in the calendar year"). The Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl saw its highest non-semifinal overnight of the CFP era with the Birmingham market the highest-rated for all three games as 50%+ watched the Alabama-Oklahoma game. (link, link); Here is a chart of the top-rated markets for Saturday's CFP games. Not surprisingly, Birmingham, Greenville, Oklahoma City & Tulsa lead the pack. (link)
It's official, Houston has confirmed it will part ways with FB HC Applewhite after two seasons and a 15-11 record. AD Pezman, in a statement, thanked Applewhite for his commitment to the university and added: "After a thorough evaluation of our football program, it is my assessment our future opportunities for success are better addressed by making this very difficult decision now. While the immediate future may be challenging, our future at UH is very bright. We've made many sizable improvements over the past five years, and I look forward to enhancing our future success through the hiring of our next head coach." As part of the buyout, UH will pay Applewhite $1.95M for the final three years of his contract. (link); Adding to the drama, here's Stadium's McMurphy, "USC OC/former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury has declined 'a lucrative offer' to become coach at Houston, source told @WatchStadium. WVU’s Dana Holgorsen is UH’s next target, source said." (link)
Yahoo's Thamel reports former Arizona/Michigan/West Virginia HC Rodriguez will receive just under $3M for the duration of his three-year contract as the new OC at Ole Miss. Thamel says Rodriguez was also being pursued by Utah. Interestingly, the Rebels will now have two prominent former HCs as coordinators. Former Colorado/San Jose State HC MacIntyre will lead the defense in Oxford at $1.5M for three years. (link)
Rivada Networks SVP Carney and ESCP Europe Business School Professor Getz team up for the HBR: "Give Your Team the Freedom to Do the Work They Think Matters Most." Premise: "A liberated company allows employees complete freedom and responsibility to take actions that they—not their managers—decide are best for their company’s vision." Steps for management to make this work: 1) Lose your ego; 2) Share the company's vision; 3) Create the respect tide; 4) Ask your team what's in their way; and 5) Become the guardian of the liberated team. The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner on the possibility of the Pac-12's creating a new entity to house all it's revenue verticals & selling a slice (10%) for $500M, "(I also wonder about the impact a private equity investment would have on the NCAA’s economic model. Attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who’s pushing for compensation for athletes, might have some thoughts on the situation.) There is much to play out … and it’s entirely possible that nothing will come of the exploration. The closer you get to the pot of gold, after all, the less sense it makes to sell. But it’s clear that at least some of the campuses are unhappy with the revenue stream and have directed Scott to seek alternatives." (link)
SMU Senior Assoc. AD for Executive Affairs Adee chats with 1.Question's Brown on the topic of leaving a development position to work in strategic planning. Adee spent most of her career fundraising, but recently joined the Mustangs staff in a new role involving strategic planning, internal controls, and more. Adee discusses the quantitative evaluation approach she was accustomed to while working in development and gives insight on how she will be evaluated now in a position which is more project oriented. Of note, "In development, your evaluation is black and white. You have visit goals, you have a dollar goals and you try to hit those. In this role, we'll evaluate on an ongoing basis with regard to the projects I am working on. […] Everyone on our senior staff is in development in some way even if some of us don't have that title, we are always a representative of SMU." (link)
Just six weeks after agreeing to become the English Premier League's fourth CEO since its inception in 1992, Discovery Inc. executive Dinnage has had a change of heart. Dinnage, who would've been the league's first woman to hold the CEO position and was due to succeed retiring CEO Scudamore in January, did not offer an explanation as to why she has decided not to helm Europe's most profitable soccer league. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reports that many of the league's largest clubs were displeased with how Dinnage's appointment was handled, with several owners unaware that she was in the running until the day they were asked to vote on her confirmation. It remains unclear whether Scudamore, who has served as CEO for the past 20 years, will remain in the post while the search for his successor continues. (link)
Also Noticed: Missouri Director of Athletic Equipment Operations Kurowski credited with Mizzou's "football uniform frenzy," creating many of the new looks this year using mannequins in his office. (link); ESPN announces the first two quarters of 2019's UFC schedule with Ten Fight Night events on ESPN, three between now and end of June. Sports TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak wonders how the deal could impact college FB slots in Q3. (link); This is pretty crazy: Last year's champs from the NFL, FBS, FCS, DII, DIII, NAIA and NJCAA will all have a chance to defend their titles this season. (link); This year's Black Student-Athlete Summit is technically sold out, but there's still an opportunity to get on the event's wait list. (link)
