Episode 6:
Lauryn Wicks

Lauryn Wicks is your typical parent, especially considering that she has a son who is in long-term recovery after a difficult struggle with substances. What happened next is not so typical ... Lauryn's son got help because her family stayed connected and involved, and she became an advocate in her home state of Pennsylvania and nationally for the treatment of substance use disorders.

In this week's episode, Lauryn talks about her experience trying to get help for her son, how staying connected was the only thing that made sense for her, and how she has worked as an advocate for evidence-based substance use treatment ever since.

EPISODE 7: MAIA SZALAVITZ

Maia Szalavitz is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Unbroken Brain:  A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction and author or co-author of six other books. She is one of the premier American journalists covering addiction and drugs. Her book, Help at Any Cost: How the Troubled Teen Industry Cons Parents and Hurts Kids was the first book-length exposé of the “tough love” business that dominates addiction treatment. She has written for numerous major publications from High Times to the New York Times, including TIME, the Washington Post, the Guardian, VICE, Scientific American, and the Atlantic.

She joins me to talk about how we might just be looking at substance use disorders completely wrong, and that the evidence shows us that there might be a better way of thinking about it.
