Upcoming Services
Services take place at 9:30 am on Sundays in the UUS Sanctuary. A Social Hour follows around 10:30.

January 6th: ”Failure is a Possibility: Or Is It?" Rev. Diane Dowgiert
During the month of January, we will be considering the theme of possibility. At this time of year, most of us probably know what it’s like to make a resolution and fail to keep it. And yet, to embrace new possibilities means opening to the possibility of failure. Lately, experts in the fields of education, psychology and business have been extolling the benefits of failure. What role does failure play in our religious and spiritual lives?
January 13th:  "We All Wanna Change the World," Kathleen, Audrey, Laura, and Keith Friestad
The Magical Mystery Tour is coming to take you away. Get Back to a groovy time when simple messages of love, peace, and beauty were entwined in the music of the Beatles. Consider how these simple messages are just what we need today.
RE and Childcare
Each Sunday, 1st-6th graders will be able to take part in activities directly related to that Sunday’s worship theme and story. We also offer classes for Pre-K/K, Jr. High, and Sr. High youth. For more information about their themes please contact the Director of Lifespan Religious Education.

Our Nursery is open for infant through preschool-aged childcare available starting at 9:20 am.

Cycle of Life

We hold the family of UU member Bill Eginton in our hearts. Bill died today at the age of 91. A memorial service is tentatively scheduled to be held at UUS on Saturday, January 12th. Look for more details in next week's email.

No More Outer Order of Service Booklets

In an effort to live up to our Green Sanctuary Congregation Accreditation, UUS is looking for ways to cut down on paper use. One way to save trees, money, and volunteer hours is to discontinue our use of the monthly outer booklets that encase the weekly orders of service each Sunday. The outer booklets were a fairly recent tradition, less than two years old, and while pretty, contained information that can easily be found elsewhere on our website, monthly newsletter (available at the Welcome Table), or other informational resources. We appreciate your understanding as we navigate this change. Thank you for helping us be a Green Sanctuary Congregation!

Reminder to Check Realm Giving
As we move from the 2018 pledge year to 2019, please check to make sure any recurring payments you have (or had) set up in Realm are all in good order. A few members have already reported that their 2018 pledge was accidentally set to continue indefinitely and that they effectively double-paid their January 2019 pledge (it's easy for me to refund you if this happens to you!).

It's also common for people to expect their 2018 pledge to continue but forget to adjust the amount to match their 2019 pledge information, and for people to forget that they have changed credit cards or bank accounts without updating their Realm payment method.

You can find information on accessing and editing Realm giving here, or you can contact the office if you would like help. (Please also check to ensure any recurring payments to the Capital Campaign have ended).
Social/Racial/Environmental Justice News & Events
Write Here! Write Now! January 6th
Start the new year by urging our Senators to stem climate change by integrating new energy technologies into infrastructure projects. On January 6th, come to our “Write Here! Write Now!” table in the Fellowship Hall to write a letter to our representatives. Fact sheets and supplies will be available. You can also write letters in advance and drop them off on Sunday or mail them in beforehand. UUs for Social Justice’s Capitol Hill Advocacy Corps will hand-deliver letters in Washington, DC on January 8th. Contact Sally Hartman at sallyahartman@hotmail.com. To learn more check UUSJ’s advocacy page.
UUS Day of Service, January 26th
Service is our prayer, so mark your calendars! Join other UUs at our building or around the community on Saturday, January 26th. We’ll be cleaning the Winter Shelter, making tied blankets (a good project to include the kids), knitting prayer shawls, making main dishes for Free Lunch and for the Bird House (a hospice home), and helping at the Coralville Food Pantry and Uptown Bill's.
