Night Attack

Pictured here: Palestinians gather around a boy transported into an ambulance after being attacked by Israeli settlers.

In the middle of the night, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians in the Salaymeh neighborhood on December 26. Two settlers from Kiryat Arba threw rocks, injuring one boy, who was 14-years-old. CPT witnessed the boy being taken away in an ambulance after sustaining a head injury. After the settlers attacked, Israeli soldiers raided a home and arrested a 16-year-old boy and took him to a prison in Tel Rumeida.

Similar acts of settler violence throughout Palestine have significantly increased according to recently published data by the United Nations, which has documented 217 incidents where settlers attacked Palestinians in 2018. Palestinians were injured by settlers in 60 incidents and Palestinian property was damaged in 157 incidents. The UN reports that this is the highest level of incidents it has recorded since 2014, bearing witness to the increasing violence that Israeli settlers afflict upon Palestinians, including the community of al-Khalil.

Delayed and Harassed

Pictured here: A father and son walk through Qituon checkpoint after being delayed by Israeli Border Police inside the checkpoint.

In the past week, school children, teachers and adults have been harassed and delayed by Israeli military on their way to school and work through Qituon checkpoint. On the morning of December 26, Israeli Border Police forced multiple male adults to go through a metal detector. Some would go through the metal detector without it making an alarm, but were still forced to give their IDs to the military. Throughout the morning, Israeli Border Police called male adults and teachers "Walid," meaning boy. There were many children who were delayed from going to school because the Israeli military persistently delayed, ID checked, and body searched male teachers and adults. CPT calculated that 60% of the total boys going through Qituon checkpoint were prevented by Israeli military from getting to school on time.

Slowly Moving

Pictured here: A man and two boys wait to get through Qituon checkpoint, requesting that Israeli Border Police allow them passage through the checkpoint to go to work and school.

On December 30, Israeli Border Police commanded three boys passing through the turnstile of Qituon checkpoint go through the canister one by one. The first boy going through the canister was body searched by border police while the other two boys waited outside the canister. Several teachers and students were delayed getting to school on time because Israeli Border Police checked the IDs and searched the bodies of most male adults and teachers. The Israeli military claimed that they delayed children, teachers and adults because rocks were thrown at the checkpoint but CPT was present at the time those claims were made and documented no rocks thrown during the entire morning.

New Year, No Movement

Pictured here: A Palestinian man stands delayed by Israeli Border Police at a checkpoint as tourists shop and Palestinians talk to one another near the checkpoint.

Every day, every year, Palestinians are stopped and detained at checkpoints as they travel, including those who go to Ibrahimi Mosque to worship. On New Years Day, Palestinians were delayed at a checkpoint and were forced to give their IDs to Israeli Border Police. In addition to delaying Palestinians, Israeli Border Police forced a couple of Palestinians to go away as they talked near the checkpoint. Wherever one wants to go, wherever one wants to be, Israeli military continues to deny Palestinians the right to move freely.
