HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Dear Fellow JLCV Members:

Happy New Year! I hope you all are doing well and had a restful Holiday Season. We have a lot of fantastic events scheduled in January: a community night, a few diaper repackagings, a new member sip n see, and a training to name a few!

An Announcement: The Membership was asked in the Member Survey if it would be helpful to adjust the time of our General Membership Meetings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The feedback we received is that the majority of the members would like that change. Therefore, this change will happen at our February General Membership Meeting. I appreciate that this may not work for all members but please know that the social portion of the meeting is from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., which will allow members time to transition from work, home and other activities. The  Business part of the meeting will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I look forward to see you all this month! As always please feel free to reach out to me at any time!

Best,

Jill Everett
JLCV President

DIAPER BANK UPDATE

Happy New Year everyone! At this time last year we were just kicking off our initial diaper drive...we have come a VERY long way and you should all be incredibly proud of your hard work over the past year.

In 2018 we distributed over 35,000 diapers. This year, we plan to grow that number to 100,000! To accomplish this will take involvement from each and every one of you.

Here's how you can help:

  • Sign up for a repackaging event. Our next one is before the January GMM. Thanks to Kit Cahill we have speakers so we can pack and groove.
  • Host a diaper drive at your school, place of work, etc. Email Amanda to coordinate.
  • Write a post about the diaper bank on your social media channels to raise awareness. For inspirtation, suggested wording can be found here

Thanks so much, and here's to an exciting 2019 ahead!

Amanda

DONE-IN-A-DAYS (DIADS)

A handful of members completed the book sort at the Fletcher Free Library on Monday, Dec. 10 and enjoyed it so much that the committee is currently working with the library to arrange another project this Spring.  In addition, initial discussions were held with the American Red Cross in regards to several service projects that will fit into the Junior League’s overall mission. We will be offering another Food Shelf service opportunity once the dates can be confirmed. We are currently ironing out details and those DIAD projects will be posted to the calendar soon.

Meanwhile, the Diaper Bank re-packaging events are turning into well-oiled MACHINES!  Many minds have contributed to streamlining the process and the worker bees thankfully keep showing up.  You gals are just “getting it done.”  These FUN, quick events continue to be great ways to earn your community service hours as part of our chapter’s core mission.  We are still aiming to have ALL members participate in a minimum of one Diaper Bank DIAD before the end of the Junior League year this May.  New opportunities for your service are posted below.

JANUARY FEATURED MEMBER
Aimee Stephenson
Why did you join the JLCV?
I joined the Junior League in Colorado Springs originally when my kids were young. I found it to be a great way to connect with women in my community and it got me out of my PJs and out of the house. We have a lot of new mom members now and I can so relate! When I moved back to Burlington in 2014, I looked into the JLCV as a way to again connect with women in my community.

What is your favorite part about being in the Junior League?
I love the variety of powerful women I meet and  deepening our relationships through the volunteer and social opportunities provided by the League. I am super excited about the Diaper Bank and the possibilities it offers, both for our community and our League. It's a great cause to rally around and an opportunity to build our membership.

What are some activities you do outside the League?
For the past two years, I did dragon boat racing with Dragonheart Vermont. We went to club crew world championships in Szeged, Hungary this past summer. I also love to entertain at home-- dinner parties as well as larger gatherings centered around good food, wine, friends and conversation.

What brought you to Vermont?
I first lived in Vermont from 1994-2001 when I was in graduate school at UVM. We have family here and would travel back almost every summer to visit with the intent of moving back at some point. That point came in 2014 and I've been loving living in Burlington ever since!

What's your go-to restaurant?
Hen of the Wood -- I love their oyster happy hour, and the rabbit pate is to die for along with those Parker house rolls. Yum!

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about education. In one way or another, my whole career has centered around access and equity in education. I strongly feel that learning is transformative and one of the fundamental ways to change the trajectory of their life. I am the Director of Resource Development for Community College of Vermont. It is a great place to work and I am truly committed to our mission of access, affordability and student success. I also teach Microbiology for the College!

LET'S SHOW OFF!
In order to showcase the exciting news and updates from the Junior League of Champlain Valley, including announcements about Vermont's first Diaper Bank, we will be launching an external newsletter in 2019.

So what's the difference? The monthly JLCV members newsletter will still include news, DIADs, fundraising, updates, and all the details you look forward to each month.  An external newsletter is a second opportunity to showcase our successes and talk about the amazing work done by the league to non-members. Different from a press release, this newsletter will be a digest of information of interest to the public, and can go to past or potential sponsors, community partners, and prospective new members.

Don't worry-- JLCV members and sustainers will still recieve the monthly newsletter via email with internal information relevent to our league.

Start thinking about the exciting news from the league that you'd like to amplify and share around Vermont!

Email External Communications chair, Sarah Aceves with suggested additions to the press list, for more information, or to request external communications.

To list an event on the JLCV website or if you have questions related to the website, please email relevant details and  information to Web & Social Media Chair, Nancy Warner.

For any updates, photos, or events that should be included in upcoming newsletters, please email Newsletter Chair, Lindsay Cahill Lord.
