2019

The New Year will see some changes to our usual operation, which will invigorate our membership.

Budget

Unfortunately the cost of the hall rental, where we meet has been going up. We managed to negotiate a whopping 50% discount, but even with that applied, the cost for the main hall for just 1 night is almost $200, and the Focus night room is half that, so for 2019 we had to increase our single membership cost to $100. Country and family memberships are changed accordingly. Anyone who has prepaid their membership for 2019 at the older rate will get the benefit of the 2018 rate. So our fees are as follows:
  • $100 for an individual - CORRECTED
  • $50 for country membership
  • $125 for 2 people in the same household
  • $10 on the night for visitors on any night
  • $5 per night for financial members for Focus Night
Note: Visitors cannot enter any competitions or borrow club equipment. There is no free 1st attendance for new comers, however if someone joins after their 1st night having paid $10, that will count towards the joining fee.

We need to book and pay for the hall in advance, so please pay you membership in January!
You can pay by
  • EFT (Electronic funds transfer, using internet)
    • Put your NAME into the transfer comment field
    • Pay to BSB: 032-090 Account number: 390-845 Account name: Sydney Video Makers Club
  • Cash to the Treasurer (Terry Wayne), President (Paul Szilard), VC (Eddie Hanham) or Secretary (Ian Scott)
  • Credit card - see the President (Paul Szilard)
  • PayPal.com - send payment to vp@sydneyvideomakers.org.au with your name in the comment
  • or request a credit card or PayPal invoice by email
IMPORTANT: Once you have made a payment, please email us at president@sydneyvideomakers.org.au so that we can mark you as financial on the register and activate your website login.

Competitions

To my greatest surprise, the competitions programme had been the source of some intense arguments, with people in exact opposites of the arguments, so realising that it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time, the committee had come up with a plan. We urge our members to embrace the decisions and find their own path. We are going to have a set competition every 2nd month, however we will also have an "Open" at the same time so that if you don't want to enter in the set subject, you can still enter in the Open one. The aim of this is to encourage members to be creative, so they can choose to work within the set subject, and/or do anything that takes their imagination.
  1. February: 30 sec car advert + Open
  2. April: Horror without dialog (music and sounds effects welcome, but no dialog or subtitles) + Open
  3. June: Music video + Open
  4. August: Editing a shared set of footage + Open
  5. Oct: VOTY entries
Entry dates will be 1 week prior to club night, via internet upload.
We will have external judging in that week, so that on club night we can screen the entries and review the judges' notes and also have a Q&A.

Publicity

For the club to survive, we need to have a minimum of 40 financial members, so if you enjoy our club, then please spread the word and encourage new people to join. That way not only will we able to fund our existence, but we will have a better and more interesting cross section of members and a more exciting program for the year!

Remember where to find us:
  1. On the internet at http://sydneyvideomakers.org.au
  2. On Facebook (pst - we now have 295 members there!)
  3. On Meetup

Get Involved

Our club is an interactive concept. We want to encourage you to get involved, that way you will not only help the club, but also help yourself to get new friends and to participate. We need people to:
  1. Join the VOTY sub-committee
  2. Join our Welcoming Team
  3. Send in a short article to be published in this Newsletter
  4. Offer to help run the nights using the projection gear, setting it up and putting it away
  5. Join a film making team (or start a new team!) and try your hand at directing, script writing, editing video or sound recording, and more
  6. Suggest discussion topics for a future night
  7. Share your videos
  8. Share your knowledge

Tech Stuff

This year has had a barrage of tech new products, such as the Blackmagic Cinema 4k Pocket Camera, Fuji X-H1 and X-T3 mirrorless bodies and finally the entries into mirrorless by the 2 giants, Canon and Nikon. In the peripherals and accessories, we had good representations with new products from Australian heavy weights, RØDE, BlackMagic Design and Atomos, as well as companies from the land of the rising Yen, Sony, Panasonic etc..

I won't go into details as you can all find out facts and reviews just by going to Google or YouTube.

Likewise, I don't see the point of repeating (plagiarizing?) good educational and technical content on the web, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the free on-line VideoMaker Magazine who have a ton of great material.

If YOU have some new video tech that you acquired in 2018, then please send in a short article about it and share your excitement with the rest of our readership.

2019 Kick Off

Our first meeting for the year is on Wednesday 23 January 2019. Please see our club web page for the programme.

Club Teams

Eddie Hanham - Team Co-ordinator

We currently have 3 team leaders:
  1. Mark Ward's team
  2. Ian Scott (NUTS Team) - team full
  3. Paul Szilard (PACKERS Team) - team full
We would love to have a couple more, so please consider standing as Team Leader. This role is more of a motivator/project manager/producer and does not require any video making experience.

Please get financial, and join Mark's team! He is lonely, and has a lot of skills to share! Although the other teams are full, if you really, really, want to join one of them, then speak to the team leader. Or why not start your own team?

So try and go over here (https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/video/13176387690) and watch what you can.

Looking Back

In this section, we publish a different club member's summary, each month, of last year and expectations for this year.

Paul Szilard writes:

Gear Additions/changes

I decided to swap my Fujifilm X-H1 mirrorless camera for the Fujifilm X-T3. Subsequently the X-T3 has had some rave reviews, so I feel happy that I've backed the right horse. (2 other club members have also bought this camera!)
