January: New Beginnings(?)
Happy 2019! A new year has arrived. We have purchased our new calendars (I still adore hang-on-the-wall paper versions), put away the Christmas decorations (we have all done that, haven't we?), and ventured forth with renewed purpose, drive and optimism.

Well, maybe. If you're "just not feelin' it" as my nephew used to say when asked to help out around the house, don't despair! Look around. The two-leggeds might be scurrying around but everything else in the Northern Hemisphere is still sleeping - or at least a little sluggish.

No matter the decree of our timekeeping pieces to jump in and rev up, we are in the midst of winter's quietude. True, the light is slowly returning, but we are still just approaching the season's midpoint.

How do you handle the disconnect? Go easy on yourself. Remember winter's gifts of rest and restoration. If you're recovering from or mourning the passing of the holidays, allow yourself some distraction-free time to go within, dream, breathe in calm. You may not be able to hibernate for weeks on end, but carve out small moments amongst the bustling: light a candle, read a book, enjoy a soak in the tub.

In this newsletter I share some more on embracing the Danish concept of "hygge" to get the most enjoyment out of winter. If you're feeling a bit sluggish due to holiday excess, there's a simple, delicious recipe for detoxifying. And because I'm walking my talk on ignoring cultural calendar norms and enjoying winter's calm, another teaser on the difference between expectations and intentions. I'm adjusting expectations and focusing on the intention. It can wait.

Winter wellness,

Kim
Hygge=Happiness

As you shovel snow or slog through sleet and fog (is that where the term "slog" comes from??), do you dream of upping your happy quotient by escaping to a tropical paradise? What if the key to happiness is an odd-sounding Danish quality you can re-create in your own home? Say hello to hygge this wintry season!
Kicharee: The Cure-All

After the holidays - a time commonly known/celebrated/denounced for excess consumption, you might be feeling the need to simplify or even detoxify your diet. This simple dish is considered a cure-all in India and can be used by any body type to ensure it's (safely) out with the old and in with the new! Get the recipe here.
Intention vs. Expectation

The new year brings not only good intentions, but also heavy expectations. As the calendar page turns, we are expected to set our resolutions or BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals). We are expected to know exactly what we want to achieve or how we wish to improve. We are encouraged to be concrete and specific so that we can measure our progress and meet our expectation. After all, intention doesn't count for much all by itself. Or does it? I intend to find out by the next newsletter.
