Muse Performance Arts Award 

MUSE will celebrate artistic inspiration on Friday, February 8, 2019  at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg at 7:00 p.m.  The sixth annual benefit for the arts will recognize the breadth and beauty of art and culture in our City of the Arts, and pay tribute to those that continue to inspire and guide St. Petersburg to its standing as an international arts destination.  Proceeds will benefit artists, arts education, and arts & cultural organizations through our Arts Alliance programs and services.

Born in Vero Beach, John Lamb grew up as a child who loved playing music.  His long career took him around the world, playing tuba in the Air Force band, playing bass for the Duke Ellington Orchestra and others, then back to St. Petersburg in 1972.  He has played music with the best:  Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae and his jazz idol, Miles Davis.  Surrounded by the cream of the musical crop, John set a not-so-modest goal to become “the world’s greatest bass player”.  In a 1964 article in Downbeat Magazine during his stint with Duke Ellington, he achieved his goal and was listed as one of the top five bass players in jazz.  In St. Petersburg, he taught music at Seminole High School and St. Petersburg College until his retirement in 1999.  Since then, John has remained active in the jazz scene in the greater Tampa Bay area, playing gigs at the Palladium, numerous restaurants and just about anywhere there is music, mentoring musicians and having fun.
