TREND WATCH

Novel collaborations in health and pharma

In the early days of Luminary Labs, we were answering two big questions for our clients: “what should we do, and how should we do it?” In more recent years, a third question has entered the mix: “who should we partner with to make it happen?”

Luminary Labs CEO Sara Holoubek will be on the West Coast during next week’s J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco, where she’ll be asking about novel collaborations in health and pharma. Aetna and CVS just closed a megadeal; Walgreens is partnering with Verily and Humana; Mount Sinai, Sema 4, and Sanofi are teaming up. (Mount Sinai also recently launched an open innovation program to foster collaboration and long-term partnerships.) If the cocktail party invitations at #JPM19 are any indication, the collaborations are only beginning. If you’ll be in San Francisco next week, we’d love to say hello — email editor@luminary-labs.com to schedule a meeting during Sara’s office hours.

LL in the news

“The reality is that innovation challenges are here to stay in pharma, especially Big Pharma ... It makes sense to seek out and partner with entrepreneurs who are immersed in digital.”

FiercePharma’s recent story about crowdsourcing and prize competitions cited Luminary Labs’ State of Open Innovation report: “pharma and healthcare use open innovation most often to stimulate concept generation (68%), position their companies as innovative (64%), and develop new solutions (64%).”

Morgan Stanley hosted its first “Space Summit” in New York last month.

Bayer is using internal open innovation programs to foster employee collaboration and agility.

In 2019, blockchains will start to become boring — but probably more useful. This may be “the year that blockchain technology finally becomes normal.”
