A Happy New Year to All!

We have many exciting opportunities coming your way this year, so be sure to stay tuned to our semi-monthly newsletter for news about workshops, classes, readings, mentorship opportunities, and competitions.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR MUSICAL THEATRE CREATION

INSTRUCTORS BOB MARTIN AND LISA LAMBERT

Theatre Alberta, Alberta Playwrights’ Network, and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity are proud to welcome Bob Martin and Lisa Lambert, creators of the award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone for a master class in Musical Theatre Creation, from March 1 to 3, 2019.

This three-day master class allows playwrights and theatre creators to learn Martin and Lambert’s unique and collaborative style of musical theatre creation and apply elements of it to their own practice.

Long-time collaborators Bob Martin and Lisa Lambert created The Drowsy Chaperone with writer Don McKellar and composer Greg Morrison. The play opened on Broadway in 2006 and went on to receive multiple Tony and Drama Desk awards, including awards for both book and score.

This program is geared towards experienced playwrights and theatre creators with an interest in musical theatre creation. Individual artists, as well as those already working as part of writing teams, are encouraged to apply. Participants are encouraged to bring work-in-progress material to explore and receive feedback from the instructors. Songwriting experience is an asset but not a requirement. Please note that this class will not cover traditional musical composition (ie. writing sheet music).

Tuition: $375
Accommodation: private rooms $65/night or shared rooms $35/night
Meals: $41/person/day
Total: Ranges from $575 to $800 depending on arrival and departure dates and choice of private or shared accommodations.

Prices are approximate, inclusive of GST, and subject to change.
An additional fee of $100 will be charged to participants residing outside of Alberta.

For more information and to register, visit Theatre Alberta's website.

SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN TO THE ALBERTA QUEER CALENDAR PROJECT

In 2020, Cardiac Theatre in partnership with What It Is Productionswill present The Alberta Queer Calendar Project: a full-year, January to December endeavour that will see the commission of 12 new plays by queer Albertan writers – one for each month of the year.

WORDSHED YEG
JANUARY 26 & 27, 2019 in EDMONTON

WORDSHED is a workshop program open to all members in good standing. Members are asked to submit their completed plays to be read by an APN dramaturg, who then meets with you to discuss and strategize how best to use the 3 hour session with up to 4 actors. The strategy is based upon the playwright's needs. Is there a character journey that you want to focus on? Do you want to examine plot? Theme? Structure? Do you just want to hear the play out loud? It's up to you.

The cost of a WORDSHED workshop is $175, and covers fees for the actors and dramaturg, administration, workshop space rental, and printing.

Interested playwrights should contact Artistic Associate Bevin Dooley before January 15. If we are not familiar with you work, it is highly recommended that your play go through the ACT ONE process before submitting your piece to Wordshed.

Support Our Work

APN annually provides support, development, resources, & technology for over 75 playwrights and provides employment opportunities for over 100 actors and directors. In the past 5 years, we have championed over 25 plays which have gone on to production at theatres of all sizes. As we do not produce the work, we do not see any return on the investment we have made.

If you like what we do, please think about supporting us with a donation through ATB Cares (click the link below). We can turn every dollar into three dollars of support for the writers and creators in our great province.
