Year in Review
In 2018, the International Water Institute (IWI) had all 10 staff, one Conservation Corpsmember, and 13 interns working at full capacity to deliver on its contracted monitoring, education, and decision support projects. We are thankful for the many partnerships and collaborations with other organizations and agencies which enable our staff to be successful year in and year out, and look forward to what promises to be a great 2019!

Our top highlights from 2018 include:
  • 315 students and teachers from MN, ND, and MB attended the 23rd Annual River Watch Forum at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks
  • 556 River of Dreams canoes were launched by students from 17 schools in Minnesota
  • River of Dreams was featured in the Crookston Times and Northern Watch
  • Collection of just under 1,000 water quality samples in the Red and Mississippi River Basins
  • Hosted first ever overnight River Watch Summer Retreat, with 10 students in attendance
  • Redesigned IWI website
  • PTMApp hydro-conditioning for Roseau, Otter Tail, Bois de Sioux, ND Wild Rice, Park, and Maple Rivers
Thank You, Kyle!
In mid-December, Kyle Glowa, our 2018 Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa Individual Placement, completed his yearlong term with the IWI. Kyle impacted the IWI in many ways and was involved in nearly every project we undertake, from hydro-conditioning for PTMApp to pollutant load monitoring, River of Dreams, and River Explorers paddle trips. Kyle's ability to take on these varied tasks was a huge asset, and we will all miss his easy-going, positive attitude on the job. As Kyle prepares for what is next, we wish him all the best!
Fall Photos
In mid-October, Asher joined Kent Lewarne of the South Central Eco Institute in leading the first ever River Watch Fall Kick-Off at Oak Hammock Marsh, Manitoba. River Watch students from north of the border are working to complete the same team challenge as US students, and will compete at the Forum in February.
Larimore's River Watch team found a major beaver dam on the Turtle River when they were out sampling with Danielle this fall.
This school year Wyatt Pugh (pictured at right) became the new River Watch instructor at Norman County East HS. The team sampled all of their sites on a crisp October day with Andy.
River Watch Forum 2019
The 24th annual River Watch Forum will be held February 27, 2019 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND. This year, teams must identify an issue in their watershed, propose a data-based solution to an issue, and present to a local group or agency with knowledge of the watershed to get feedback on their approach. An ArcGIS story map will be created by each team to detail the issue, proposed solution, and feedback received. The Forum will involve students in a number of interactive sessions and activities throughout the day. Visit the River Watch Forum page on our website for more info!

Excerpted Portions from the IWI blog
- Austin Braget, GIS Technician-
Hello everyone and welcome to our first blog posting of 2019!  This entry focuses on the IWI map portal, where you can find it, and what you can do with it.

The first thing you will see is satellite imagery of the Red River Basin with outlines for the entire basin as well as boundaries for each HUC 8 watershed.  There are also layers that can be selected on the right-hand side of the screen that can be turned on and off at will.  For example, you can see the flood extents for the 1997 or 2009 floods, although you will have to zoom in on an area of interest to see them...Read more here.
