New Year, New Classes
And some oldies but goodies!
Mystery Science*** NEW
Mystery Science class at Rise is science for late elementary to early junior high students. Each lesson starts by posing a question commonly asked by kids, like "Why are so many toys made out of plastic?" or “Why is snow white?” Each class uses fun educational videos, laying out the lesson’s key question. Students will then be encouraged to share their ideas and engage in group discussion. Class will end with a hands-on activity designed to help students find the answer to the key question. Lessons cover a wide range of topics, including light and sound, biodiversity, engineering, and the water cycle. Every student will have an experiment binder to track hypotheses and experiments throughout the semester.
Mystery Science is co-led by two incredible and experienced instructors: Jean Armstrong and Stephanie Rogers.
This class has limited seating and starts January 9th so sign up today!

High School (ish) Civil War Class***New
Our Beloved Mr. Adam Pruzan is back with us for a stimulating conversation about the Civil War. See his letter below:
Dear RISE Families,
This past September and October, I spent seven weeks touring Appalachia and the Deep
South, devoting much of that time to visiting museums and battlefields of the Civil War.
In this course, we will examine in depth why the war happened, how it was faught, and
the results it produced.
The first and last parts of the course will be teacher-driven, based on in-class lecture and
discussion, with some reading and writing homework assignments.
The middle part of the course, where we study the fighting of the war itself, will be
student-driven. Each student will choose a specific focus: a particular battle, leader, or
subject. Students will create presentations about their topics.
Students MUST be prepared to put a significant amount of work into their presentations.
We will choose topics on the second day of class, so that you will have a full month to
prepare your presentations. If you wish, you may simply write a paper and present it to
the class, but I encourage you to create something more visual, such as a PowerPoint
presentation, a dramatic performance, a diorama or other educational artwork, etc. I want
you to choose a topic that interests YOU and will motivate you to work hard in creating
your presentation.
Looking forward to seeing you in the class.
Best,
Adam Pruzan
Class will be Thursdays from 11-12:30 and the class will run through the end of the year.
