What to Watch Out For


Ram Janmabhooomi-Babri Masjid land dispute on SC’s agenda today
 
The apex court is all set to take up a batch of petitions in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute case. A bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul  will decide whether the case should be slated for urgent hearing. In 2010, the Allahabad High Court had ordered a three-way division of the 2.77 acres of the site, giving each part to Nirmohi Akhara Sect, Sunni Central Wakf Board and Ramlalla Virajman. The conflict over the land began after Babri Masjid was burned down by right-wing Hindu groups in 1992.
 
Rahul Gandhi and Smriti Irani to visit UP’s Amethi today ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections
 
Congress president Rahul Gandhi and BJP leader and Textiles Minister Smriti Irani will be visiting UP’s Amethi today, ahead of the general elections this year.  The Congress chief will be meeting the people of his constituency, attend a public and party reception, hold 'corner meetings' in Salon and visit Pareshdepur, Naseerabad, Paraiya Namaksar and Gauriganj areas. Meanwhile Irani, will start her visit in the Gandhi bastion and attend a programme organised by Raghav Sewa Sansthan. In 2014’s general elections, Irani contested and lost to Gandhi by a margin of 12.32% in Amethi. 
 


Former TERI professor Pachauri’s case to be heard in Delhi’s Saket Court today
 
Delhi's Saket Court will be hearing the argument in connection with a sexual harassment case lodged against former TERI professor R K Pachauri. In 2015, Pachauri was accused by an ex colleague in 2015 of stalking and assault following which a chargesheet was filed against him on March 1 of 2016. The former chairman of The Energy and Resources Institute was asked to step down following the filing of the chargesheet.

Right-wing groups lash out through stone pelting and vandalism day after historic entry in Sabarimala
 
Violence clenched the state of Kerala a day after two women entered the Lord Ayyappa shrine in Sabarimala. At the centre of the violence were right-wing Hindu groups who started scuffles with the police, CPI(M) and Left allied groups and journalists as a part of the Hartal called by Sabarimala Karma Samithi.  750 arrests have been made and over 559 cases have been registered. Meanwhile, CJI Gogoi has refused to hear a contempt petition against the Sabarimala temple authorities on priority. The temple authorities had performed a shuddi or “purification” ceremony a few hours after the two women in their 40s performed darshan at the temple in the early hours of the morning.
 


JPC report on Citizenship Amendment Bill adopted amidst opposition
 
The Joint Parliamentary Committee report on the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill was adopted, amid protests by opposition party MPs on Thursday. The Bill seeks to grant Indian nationality to people belonging to minority communities. The JPC report will recommend that the original form of the proposed legislation be introduced. Several parties including the Congress, the TMC and CPI(M) have been opposing the bill on the grounds that citizenship cannot be given on the basis of a religion.
 
Chinese moon landing on the ‘Darkside’ of the moon, a world first
 
In a first for any global space program China landed a spacecraft on the darkside of the moon on Thursday. Previously, US and the former Soviet Union had sent a spacecraft to the near side of the moon but, this is the first time that a spacecraft has landed on the far side. At 11.40 AM a photo sent out to by the craft Chang’e 4 showed small craters and a barren surface. This is the country’s second moon landing since the Chang'e 3 made its moon landing in 2013.
