THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, remembering how Magi from the East came and greeted the Christ child, presenting him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  The Feast of the Epiphany concludes the 12 days of the Christmas season.

January 13: The installation of the Right Reverend Andrew Asbil as Bishop of the Diocese of Toronto.  4pm at St James' Cathedral.  Church and King St.  All welcome.

Sign up sheets will be available soon or reserve a spot by calling the office 416-485-2656. Seating is capped at 24 people. This is a good occasion to invite a friend or neighbour to join you at a church event. Lunch is pay-what-you-can with a suggested minimum donation of $5.

January 19: From our Deacon, Beth Nelson. Atul Gawande's book Being Mortal was recommended to me last summer by my sister, Sarah. She had read it for a book club and highly recommended it. She thought that anyone involved in a caring community should read it too. I was fortunate enough to find a copy at the bazaar (right after I had ordered it on line!) and completely agree with Sarah. And to that end, I encourage each of you to read it and participate in an afternoon of discussion on  Saturday, January 19th at 2 pm.

Gawande is a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a staff writer for The New Yorker and a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Being Mortal is not a complicated, medical read! It is "wise and deeply moving, an essential and insightful book for our times".
Yes, this book deals with difficult questions that perhaps we might want to ignore. But they are important questions about living a life with meaning. It is not "just about dying and the limits of medicine but about living to the last with autonomy, dignity, and joy."

We'll gather at 2 pm over a cup of tea. Please read the book in advance: you can get it at the library or local bookstore. There are copies available to borrow.
Please sign up on the sheet outside Megan's office.  We'll go ahead with a minimum of 6 participants.

February 9: The Mystery Dinner is back!  Purchase a ticket and on the night of the event, discover who will host you for dinner in their home.  Four hosts are confirmed, including a child-friendly option.  Stay tuned for further details.
