Tapasā Expert Pacific Teacher Group Fono January 2019

The Expert Pacific Teacher Group members met for the third talanoa (face to face conversation) with the Teaching Council in late January. Together they are co-constructing the implementation of Tapasā. Also involved in this fono were representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Pacific Peoples.

Register now for a Tapasā workshop

You're invited to a Tapasā professional learning and development workshop on teaching Pacific learners across all education sectors. These workshops will be held nationally and will be co-facilitated by the team of Expert Pacific Teachers and Teaching Council staff.

All teachers, principals/professional leaders, kaiako and tumuaki in early childhood education, primary and secondary school settings are welcome to attend these free workshops.

The aim of Tapasā is to build a confident, culturally competent education workforce, which is able to engage successfully with Pacific learners. The programme will assist you to:

Understand how the Tapasā Cultural Competencies Framework was developed and its relevance for you as a teacher
Develop a high-quality and empowering learning environment for Pacific learners
Have a strong understanding of both your own and your learners’ identities, languages and cultures
Improve learning outcomes for Pacific learners, their parents, families and communities
Apply the lens of Tapasā to the Standards for the Teaching Profession and the Code of Professional Responsibility.

The Teaching Council has the responsibility of implementing Tapasā with the teaching profession. The workshops will be held on week days between 3:30pm – 5:45pm or 6:30pm – 8:45pm and a light snack will be provided. We are expecting strong interest in these workshops so please register as soon as possible.

Candidates announced for the Teaching Council Board elections

The candidate list for the Teaching Council elections is now available – click here. Candidate profile statements will be available soon.

Remember – you have until 22 February to make sure your Practising Certificate or Limited Authority to Teach is current beyond 26 March 2019 so you’re eligible to vote. Check the Register to find your Practising Certificate expiry date.

If you’ve changed jobs or have a new email address make sure you let us know so you can vote electronically. See our website for more information about the elections.

Induction and mentoring funding update

Are you a provisionally certificated part-time or relief teacher, or an itinerant teacher of music?

If so, the Teaching Council can offer funding to cover the costs of a mentor for your induction and mentoring programme.

Applications are open for 2019, with funding available for the full academic year. The mentor must be based at one of the schools or centres you currently teach in.

Join us for our new Code and Standards workshops

We invite you to come to join one of our new Moving on with Our Code, Our Standards workshops.

The workshops are an opportunity for you to discuss what you have accomplished with the Code and Standards so far, deepen your understandings and review appraisal systems to ensure they are valuable, manageable and learner-centred.

Register now for an English or Māori medium workshop in your region.
