Two LSU FB student-athletes, including key offensive contributor Edwards-Helaire, were questioned by police after a shooting that left one man dead in the back of a Chevy Silverado. An attorney for the pair says both were released after questioning & the incident was the result of self defense. The attorney does not expect any charges to be filed as both fully cooperated with law enforcement & were the original callers to 911 about the situation. Tigers AD Alleva: "Right now, our concern is for the safety and well-being of our student athletes. They have been involved in a traumatic incident and we have made our counselors available to assist immediately." (link)
Tennessee AD Fulmer reflects on the Vols' National Championship following the 1998 season, equates the university's situation then to what he sees after leading the entire department for the last year, "It was a very clear chain of command (then); That's what I'm wanting here. I think in a year we've made significant progress. I like working with people. I like faculty and administration, for us to all be on the team, and we're getting it." (link)
The Athletic's Emerson reports Georgia will move forward on new FB-only digs next year, continuing the facilities boom for the gridiron Bulldogs. Emerson indicates key donors have already been approached about the project that will include "team meeting rooms, coaching offices, a new weight room and more." Investment amount? Over $63M, per Emerson. More details expected at the next athletic board meeting in February. (link)
If another federal government shutdown occurs, Air Force athletics won't be impacted this time around as "The Department of Defense was funded for the fiscal year, which runs through September 2019, and the Air Force Academy and its athletics would be covered under that financial umbrella." (link)
Virginia Tech cancels its FB series with ECU, won't travel to Greenville next season (or '23 & '25) & instead will face two FCS opponents during their 2019 slate. Looks like Hokies AD Babcock wanted to move the '19 matchup to a neutral site. The cancellation between the two earlier this season due to Hurricane Florence seems to be part of the tension. Babcock: "Obviously with the miscommunication and the situation this year, it gave us a chance to sit back and evaluate our schedule. […] We let some time go by to just let some of the emotions of the situation go, so we could make a decision that was best for our football program." (link, link)

Ohio State AD Smith says outgoing FB HC Meyer will become Asst. AD for the Buckeyes. Smith mentions raising money, helping to develop other OSU HCs, speaking engagements & being a part of the Bucks' Leadership Institute as items Meyer will be involved with. Smith on the possibility of Meyer hanging around the FB program too much, "I’m not that worried about it, but it’s something we have to pay attention to. I’m not that worried because of our relationship. I’m very direct with him. If I see him step over, I’ll say, ‘Hey, buddy, let’s talk about that.’ We have that relationship where I can say, 'Brother, you’ve got to be careful here. What are you doing?'" (link)
Houston FB fell to Army West Point 70-14 in yesterday's Armed Forces Bowl, ending the Cougars' campaign at 8-5. Reports hit the wire that HC Applewhite's job was in doubt going forward as it also sounds like OC Briles is headed to Florida State. UH AD Pezman, generally, "Within the last several weeks, we have shown our commitment to our football program under Major with salary increases to specific positions in an attempt to retain his staff for the future." (link)
"There's no issue with that with me. I just do my job as well as I possibly can and that's what I do every day. I'm a man of God, so I've got an audience of one, and I [show up] every day, work as hard as I can for my guys and at the end of the day, if I know that I've prepared and worked hard, then that's what matters to me." That's UCLA MBB HC Alford on questions about his future in Westwood as the Bruins sit at 7-5 after a 2017-18 campaign of 21-12 (11-7) & a First Four exit. (link)
Stadium MBB reporter/analyst Goodman continues his 'Conference Chain of Command' series with the Ivy League. Final rankings, based on feedback from coaches around the league: Penn, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Brown Dartmouth. One of the more interesting comments comes for Cornell, "Big campus and college town feel that’s unique within the league. It’s almost like a Big Ten-type of feel as a school." Pro & con feedback for each program included. (link)
While we all want only "A players" on our teams & within our organizations, that's an impossibility per former NYU professor & corporate consultant Kislik. So, how do you get the most out of your "B" employees & retain them for the future? 1) Get to know and appreciate them as the unique individuals they are; 2) Reassess job fit; 3) Consider the possibility of bias in your assignments; 4) Intentionally support them to be their best; and, 5) Give permission to take the lead. (link)

In his latest Knowlton's Notes, Cal's namesake AD goes the video route, points to FB's wins over Washington & USC as evidence HC Wilcox is "laying a strong foundation for a program built around character, purpose & developing the entire student-athlete...the type of program we know is essential at Cal." Knowlton says FB attendance was up more that 6K per game yoy, with a doubling of student attendance. More. (link)
Western Kentucky MBB defeated St. Mary's in Bowling Green by a three-point margin, but Hilltoppers AD Stewart wishes the game would have been played on December 1st, as originally scheduled, when WKU students would have still been on campus. The Gaels tried to buy out the trip across the country for $100K, asked for the date change due to an opportunity to host Cal on the 1st of the month. Stewart: "It was a little disappointing the way it unfolded. If we have a signed contract with somebody and we agree on the date, we’re going to honor that. We’re not going to try to change that around. But at the end of the day, they changed the date, but they didn’t change the outcome. The better team won." (link)
A man who suffered brain injuries during on-field halftime activities at a San Diego State-Fresno State FB game in 2017 has filed a lawsuit against both universities on the grounds of "permanent cognitive injuries" & "loss of consortium." While walking around the field for homecoming festivities, the man was struck by a "fast moving football" that was either kicked or thrown by players on the field warming up for the second half. The suit alleges the Aztecs & Bulldogs "were negligent in their hiring of Athletic Department personnel that could allow the incident to happen. It also contends the universities failed to train employees to recognize dangers to the public and that employees failed to properly supervise halftime activities." (link)
Also Noticed: Updated look at NET, RPI, KPI, BPI, SOR, KenPom & Sagarin ratings as of yesterday afternoon. One stop shop to compare most of the key MBB data points. (link); Loyola (Maryland) AD Woodruff rehires former Greyhounds Women's Soccer HC Mallia to the same post. Mallia recored a 87-45-8 mark from 1998-2004. Most recently served as an AC at Navy after stints at Tennessee, Loyola Marymount & UCLA.
