The fatal shooting in Baton Rouge involving two LSU FB student-athletes was reportedly in self-defense during a robbery gone bad. The Advocate's Toohey & Kennedy: "The two players — running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and walk-on linebacker Jared Small — were trying to sell an electronic item when Kobe Johnson pulled out a weapon and demanded the players' belongings." (link)
Northern Illinois AD Frazier pens for AthleticDirectorU on how he's framed revenue generation during his tenure in DeKalb, "In athletics, it is important to recognize the need to pursue a diversified funding approach. Of course, this sounds eminently logical but can occasionally be forgotten about when one funding avenue is going well. […] We needed to stop pulling punches and start confronting the reality of what it costs to operate a nationally competitive athletic department at the Division I level. […] Individuals and corporate partners are more inclined to lend their support when they understand the intended and actual impact of their contributions. […] We constantly remind ourselves of the need to advocate for and secure the funding required to provide our student-athletes with a transformative experience." More. (link)
SWAC Commish McClelland adds Alcorn State AVP for Athletic Compliance & Academic Service Cable as his new Senior Assoc. Commish for Administration. Cable is no stranger to the league, having worked at Jackson State, along with Alcorn. (link)
European soccer power Juventus inks an extension with Adidas worth $464M through 2027. Per Goal, "The Italian champions' previous deal with the manufacturer started in 2015 and was set to expire in 2021, but the two parties have opted to ensure their partnership keeps going." (link)

Houston Prez Khator on reports FB HC Applewhite's job is in jeopardy after an 8-5 season, "We have had a tough season, for sure, with a lot of injuries. We understand. We will review and evaluate." (link)
Drake AD Hardin stays in the house for his new FB HC as DC Stepsis has been promoted to the top spot. Hardin: "Todd distinguished himself from an incredible applicant pool because of his familiarity with our program and the vision he shared for the future of Drake football." (link); American AD Walker tabs Georgetown AHC Samol as his new Men's Soccer leader. (link)
Notable survivor & activist Tracy taking exception to Florida State's hire of new FB OC Briles. Tracy, via Twitter, implores media members to ask Noles HC Taggart about comments during his one-year stint at Oregon when he stated it's his responsibility to educate student-athletes on why sexual misbehavior is unacceptable. Tracy: "Sports media folks, could you please ask Coach Taggart about this comment when you interview him?" More. (link); Florida Atlantic Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Battle says Briles conducted himself as the "ultimate professional" during his stint with the Owls. (link)
Employee engagement as a function of personality is explored by a trio of organization experts. Check this out, "A recent meta-analysis provides some much needed data-driven answers. In this impressive study which synthesized data from 114 independent surveys of employees, comprising almost 45,000 participants from a wide range of countries — and mostly published academic studies, which met the standards for publication in peer-reviewed journals — the researchers set out to estimate the degree to which people differed in engagement because of their character traits. […] ...their results were rather staggering: almost 50% of the variability in engagement could be predicted by people’s personality. In particular four traits: positive affect, proactivity, conscientiousness, and extroversion. In combination, these traits represent some of the core ingredients of emotional intelligence and resilience. Put another way, those who are positive, optimistic, hard-working, and outgoing tend to show more engagement at work. They are more likely to show up with energy and enthusiasm for what they do." Drexel AD Zillmer pens a letter recapping the 2018 South American Drexel Field Hockey Tour. Zillmer, a longtime field hockey supporter and classical guitar player, joined the travel party of 25 student-athletes, six coaches and administrators and several parents. Stops in Montevideo, Colonia and Buenos Aires highlighted the trip. The tour "provided a short-term co-op for our student-athletes in their sport, as well as learning and interacting with other cultures. When you play local sport teams you also get to go behind the scenes of a society and interact in a people-to-people context. It is very genuine, unique, educational, and meaningful. All in all, the Uruguayans and Argentines have a very healthy and free culture in terms of how they approach sports, each other, and life. This was extremely refreshing to see and experience first-hand." (link)
A quick rundown of the conference bowl records to this point. Conference USA went 2-4 in the post-season, while the MAC recorded a 1-5 mark. The AAC has three games remaining, but stands at 1-3, while the MWC is 2-2 with a pair of kicks left. The Sun Belt is 3-1 with Arkansas State still left to play this weekend. The Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito on North Texas' loss to Utah State in the New Mexico Bowl: "Some have tried to lay the blame on the fact that UNT coach Seth Littrell had some involvement with the Kansas State job. Don't buy that. Utah State was just a better team. The Mean Green will benefit from playing in a third straight bowl game. There is no doubt about it. One just has to wonder if UNT could have picked up the bowl win it really needs had it gotten a matchup against a team that wasn't arguably among the top G5 teams in the country." Fitch Ratings Service estimates the impact U.S. sports betting has on casinos could be between $3B-$5B. Further, slot machines, table games and non-gaming attractions could see a "knock-on" benefit from sports gamblers. Penn National Gaming has the "broadest exposure" to legalized sports betting, operating in three of the five largest current sports gambling markets. Reno-based Eldorado Resorts is "best positioned" thanks to an agreement with William Hill US. Fitch Analyst Bumazhny estimates anywhere from 10-19 states could legalize the activity in 2019, with Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia already pre-filing. Bumazhny thinks New York is the most "meaningful potential market." Lots more. (link)
