Yes to Peacemaking

You Do What? Really?

I initially felt odd at Cari's Christmas party this year. During the elephant gift exchange we were supposed to share a little about who we are and what we do. My story is never an easy elevator pitch. "I'm an ordained minister. A peacemaker." People usually give me a good look over. While people are generally curious, I've not yet felt that anyone is dismissive. But then come the questions. "You do what? Really?" What follows is a longer explanation.

Ministry Vision: Andy engages Muslims in a ministry of peacemaking and reconciliation, modeling the love of Christ for Muslims. He does this locally in North America, helping churches reach out to our Muslim neighbors, while also serving with the SG MENA team in 4 strategic areas: 1) Initiatives of peacemaking (beginning in Israel/Palestine), 2) Muslim engagement, 3) Refugee support and 4) Advocacy for the persecuted church in the Middle East and North Africa.

At a grassroots level, Andy addresses ways to build bridges of understanding and trust that enable Christians to engage Muslims. He empowers the local church to bear witness to the Prince of Peace, seeking to develop relationships with the “other” and foster peacemaking initiatives. Andy is a public speaker but also comes alongside to help groups cross emotional and cultural boundaries, much like Peter and Cornelius experienced in Acts 10. He utilizes relationship building between communities, often using photography and a growing network of trusted friendships across the country in both churches and mosques. He has been to the Middle East and North Africa more than 15 times in 12 years with extended stays of 3 months twice.

To the UN: Andy recently was invited to an important meeting hosted by several Muslim organizations at the United Nations in New York City to observe and give input as they seek to rebuild their own efforts in developing inclusive societies of peace and justice. He has subsequently been invited as a Christian minister to visit Iraq and engage in deeper conversation with Muslim leaders.

In this ministry over the last 12 years, Andy has advanced peacemaking by building grassroots relationships with Muslims, organically leading to the development of many tangible bridge building initiatives, yielding thousands of encounters of loving engagement. These have served as a beautiful tonic in increasingly toxic times. Join Andy as we all reach across the divide to strangers extending a welcome to each other.

Shalom. Salaam. Peace.

Make Hummus, Not Walls Movie + Study Guide

This movie sequel and study guide releases any day now. Check here to see a video introduction to the study guide.

The study guide tracks my learning, multiple trips to the region, important interviews, and on-going work to educate and advocate for true peacemaking. This series will look at:

  1. Changing our paradigm from peacetalking to peacemaking.
  2. Why is there a conflict featuring an important interview with a Palestinian Christian friend who lived through the expulsion from her home by Israeli militias, never to return to her childhood home.
  3. Daily live and current obstacles in the city of Hebron where I lived for part of 2011.
  4. The day I became a “real peacemaker” after witnessing a home demolition.
  5. Digging deeper into frequently asked questions and popular myths.
  6. Now what & so what? What can anyone do in light of the on-going conflict? How can we seek to make a difference?
