MLS: Atlanta United hire new manager

The 2018 MLS Cup champion has its new manager. Atlanta United announced on Sunday morning that Frank de Boer will replace Gerardo “Tata” Martino as the club’s manager for the 2019 season and beyond. De Boer, who most recently coached at Crystal Palace, enjoyed a wealth of success at Ajax, where he won four Eredivisie titles. “The club’s sportive ambitions, as set out in a long-term strategy to be the best in class, clearly fits my personal ambitions,” de Boer said. “I would like to build on the current success to develop a secure, solid foundation for the club at the top of MLS and beyond. Aside from the club’s ambitions, the values, culture and the philosophy for the entire organization are a vital part in realizing that point of success. This is exactly what I believe in as a person and as a coach. All of this combined, makes that I am really excited to be a part of it.” (SBI)

Ligue 1: Weah to leave PSG on loan

Timothy Weah has been linked with a move away from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and it looks like that is coming to fruition at the start of 2019. Weah confirmed that he will leave PSG on-loan to gain more first-team experience. The 18-year-old broke into PSG’s first-team at the end of last season, but has failed to make the matchday squad since August. After strong appearances in the International Champions Cup this summer and an impressive start to domestic play, Weah looked likely for more chances under Thomas Tuchel. However, with Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani, and Neymar starring in attack, Weah has had to wait in the wings. Goal reported that Scottish Premier League side Celtic look to be the favorites for the U.S. Men’s National Team forward’s services, but no official decision has been made. (SBI)

Serie A: Cristiano Ronaldo to be left on bench

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be in the starting line-up when Juventus face Atalanta on Wednesday (9 a.m. ET, ESPN+), his coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed. The game will mark the first time Ronaldo has not begun a Serie A game since he joined Juventus in the summer. The 33-year-old has been an ever-present after swapping Real Madrid for Italy and is second in the Serie A scoring charts with 11 goals in 17 games. However, with Serie A having introduced Boxing Day fixtures for the first time this season, Allegri has confirmed that Ronaldo will be granted a rest, although he could still feature at some stage. "Ronaldo's going to be on the bench tomorrow," Allegri told Sky Sport Italia on Christmas Day. "He's available, but he's going to watch the game together with me for the first time. "I'm very happy with how he's doing, as I am with everybody," Allegri continued. "We need him to be in his best shape in March when we get to the business end of the Champions League. He's going to have to be even more decisive than he has been in recent years." (ESPNFC)

Wednesday morning transfer talk

  • Jose Mourinho wanted a defender and Manchester United are still looking to sign one even though the Special One has moved on. Nikola Milenkovic is on the club's short list with or without Mourinho, and Italian newspaper La Repubblica claim that the Fiorentina centre-back's agent is trying to get a deal done over the festive period.
  • Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang are ready to offer Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha £11m a season over a four-year contract.
  • Fernando Calero has revealed he is in London, which of course means he's going to sign for Arsenal (the club he's been linked most with) and not just there on holiday.
