Oregon AD Mullens covers a number of topics, chimes in on the state of the Pac-12, "I think the Pac-12 has a great league, and sometimes the focus only gets on football and men’s basketball results. Stanford just won a volleyball championship, which sometimes deserves some more amplification. But I understand that football and men’s basketball haven’t produced what we all want it to produce. Sometimes those things are cyclical. I think we have great institutions, we have outstanding coaches, and we all need to be working collectively to do everything we can to give our teams the best chance to succeed. The playoff is so important and gets so much attention; it’s not the only measure of success." Mullens also comments on the league's unique strategic positioning on media rights, "I think it’s still up in the air as to whether that turns out to be the right move. If the media landscape shifts and it goes our way, we could be sitting in a great position. But that is to be determined." Also, on the FB replay review process saga, "I am concerned about the perception. But I have confidence in the league on all that stuff. I was really pleased with how the commissioner brought that issue before the ADs, how he had done his review, how he shared it with us, asked for our input. That’s how it’s supposed to work. I think it’s unfortunate that it happened. I don’t think anyone in the league office is trying to influence games in any way. Again, I think they’ve got a tough job, but I do have confidence in them." More. (link)
2D Consulting's Durham catches up with venue security expert Donovan to talk college athletics. Donovan discusses balancing the fan experience with securing a safe environment at athletic venues with specificity around methods to security breaches, issues with drones, cyber terrorism, and much more. Donovan: "It doesn't take a lot of resources to have a visual deterrent around an athletic event facility, or at least around the main entrances. Even the retired squad car at the front of the parking lot can be effective. […] At the end of the day, event security all depends upon the facility owner and/or operator and how they view the topic among the number of other things they are dealing with." (link)
Latest SBJ: Media expert Ourand with a handful of predictions for 2019: A long-term extension between the SEC & CBS, on the new linear ACC Network, "It won’t be an unqualified success, but it will be good enough to keep schools happy." Ourand also thinks the AAC will re-up with ESPN in the ballpark of $8M annually per school & that the Mountain West will take greater control of its FB content with a deeper Facebook deal. (link); A handful of ADs in states now allowing legalized sports gambling discuss the changing landscape. Pitt's Lyke: "Conferences are going to need to be involved in setting guidelines and standards with consistent injury reporting information. I know coaches don’t want to share that information from a competitive standpoint. That’s one philosophy. And the other we’ll have to weigh it against is people trying to get that information or pay for that information. It’s probably going to have to be a balance between those two." More. (link); Interesting read on how JMI Sports got the 'Kentucky Proud' deal done for Kentucky's new Baseball facility. Kentucky Farm Bureau, the state's "ubiquitous insurance company" has long supported farmers & will pay the freight while also getting a significant amount of in-venue signage & recognition. Here's a key nugget, "JMI’s total revenue from the two naming-rights deals is $29.7 million — $22.2 million from football and $7.5 million from baseball — that over time will cover the $29.4 million signing bonus JMI paid UK, which was used to start building the baseball stadium." (link)
MBB HCs at UMass Lowell, UMass & Albany review how they strategize scheduling "buy games." Great Danes HC Brown notes cost of attendance has altered his approach a bit, "I've been here 18 years, and I've always been asked to bring in a certain number, and without getting into great detail, basically, I need to play two every year. Now, with the changes in the cost of attendance, we basically play 2 1/2 or three, because we have to generate money to cover our cost of attendance as well." More Brown, "You want to maximize your dollars. You want to avoid planes if you can. The schools that you can drive to tend to low-ball you a little bit, because you're only a two-hour, or a three-hour drive." (link)

"You can pretend like you care, but you can’t fake showing up. As someone who watches other leaders and tries to learn, she’s someone I’ve taken interest in. If there’s some sort of report card on her first year and a half that asks about her commitment to excellence in athletics, she’s off the charts. She’s committed to the issues surrounding athletics, to being successful and to everything at Cal being at a high level. I’ve been wildly impressed." That's Cal WBB HC Gottlieb on Chancellor Christ, who makes a point of sitting among fans when attending as many Bears' sporting events as possible. FB HC Wilcox: "I think she recognizes the importance of sport and what it does for the student-athletes and what it can do for the university, alumni and city. ... She knows that you can galvanize people through athletics. It can be a gateway. The university and the athletic department can live in harmony." Christ, who has mandated that athletics have a balanced budget by 2020 and transition to prong one of Title IX compliance by 2021, "I’m at the point in my career that I am, which is twice retired already, I feel a shortness and urgency of time. One way that I manage is to set aggressive deadlines with my senior staff. I think that works well. We don’t always meet them, but you certainly don’t meet them if you don’t set them." Also, says sports gives us a "communal identity." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd goes in on NFL organizations that are sure to take a close look at Oklahoma HC Riley, gets perspective from Sooners AD Castiglione, "…we are not in competition with the NFL. That's an entirely different structure. Our focus is try to make this the best college job. That involves so many various aspects to a coach considering this is the place they want to be. The quality of life his family has, the support staff they're given. I know how people want to take it that way sometimes." Castiglione notes former OU boss Stoops getting a few calls every year about NFL opportunities, also mentions, "Barry Switzer had the great line about Oklahoma: 'If someone sees themselves going someplace else, there will be an enormous line at the front door to get this job.'" (link)
Speaking of Riley, the AP's Russo points to Oklahoma's Murray & Alabama's Tagovailoa as prime examples of the 'Generation Z' of quarterbacks who grew up getting top shelf training & have turned tens of thousands of reps into high-flying results on the collegiate gridiron. Former NFL QB & Elite 11 proprietor Dilfer, "We’ve always had our handful of clearly the best. One through three, one through five basically have kind of been the same every year. You just know they’re going to make it. But five through 50 is 50 percent better now than it was when I started." Former NCAA EVP Luck points to sport specialization & private coaches as key for the development of many young signal callers, including his son, the former Stanford student-athlete & current Indianapolis Colts leader. (link)
The Washington State FB squad is especially fond of Fortnite, or, as student-athlete Thompson puts it, "It's school, football, Fortnite." Cougars HC Leach thinks team chemistry has improved this season, and with so many members of the team spending hours behind the Fortnite controls together, one cannot help but think there is a correlation. Leach on if he plays: "I don’t know how to do that,” Leach says from the other side of the table. “You have to be good at pushing buttons. If it’s slow. If it’s slow button pushing." Wazzu All-American Dillard: "It keeps us here, occupied, out of trouble, if you want to put it that way. It’s a fun pastime, but it can take a lot of hours without you realizing it." (link)
Purdue student & super fan Trent with amazing perspective during this holiday season as he battles cancer, "Though I am in hospice care and have to wake up every morning knowing that the day might be my last, I still have a choice to make: to make that day the best it can be. To make the most of whomever comes to visit, texts, tweets or calls me. Yet, isn’t that a choice we all have every day? After all, nobody knows the amount of days we have left. Some could say we are all in hospice to a certain degree. So why don’t we act like it? Where is your gratitude? This Christmas, what are you thankful for? I had to write my will recently, and I’m just thankful I can give my family Christmas presents, maybe even for one last time. Let’s not forget my doctors gave me three months to live almost two-and-a-half months ago. So why can’t we live grateful lives? Why can’t we make every day count like it’s the last? To me, that’s what gratitude in hospice means." (link)

Montana AD Haslam reflects on his first experience as part of the FCS selection committee, "You recognize quickly how well thought of the Big Sky Conference is. […] It was good to get to know colleagues and learn and listen and go through that process. The NCAA as an organization is obviously very, very good at running tournaments. That’s their forte. They’ve got it down to a science, so the technology you have access to and the way you vote and the process by which you do it is pretty fine-tuned." Saturday of selection weekend ran from Noon to midnight, then got going again on Sunday at 7a when budgets were reviewed for first round hosts. Continues to be excited about his own FB program's trajectory under returned HC Hauck. (link); Montana's FB attendance for the recently completed season was up a tick & resulted in $70K more of ticket revenue. Average per game: 19,022. Next year the Grizz get Eastern Washington & Idaho in Missoula, both of which will be huge draws. (link)
Northwestern State supporters have contributed $800K toward facility improvements this calendar year, including the main entrance to Turpin Stadium, a nutrition center for student-athletes, end zone hospitality areas, new tennis courts and more. A new $3.5M weight room annex will be the "crown jewel" to the Demons Unlimited Foundation "Victorious" campaign that started two years ago. FB HC Laird says the new digs will rival any facility in the country once it is built. Tennis and track locker rooms are also on the horizon.  (link)
"Slim to none" are the chances that Clemson FB student-athletes Lawrence, Giella and Galloway will get to play in the Cotton Bowl after failing drug tests due to the presence of ostarine. While the "B" sample results should be available today, the timing could be a challenge, according to a source with extensive NCAA drug-testing experience. Tigers HC Swinney: "We're just kind of at the mercy of the process. And then there's an appeal after that, but that doesn't really help with this game." More Swinney: "We're going to do everything we can to figure out if it is in the system. Heck, I don't know. I mean, who's to say that it is there? I mean, that's what we're being told, but there's -- they all will have legal representation, and there will be a process to go through to find out." (link); Meanwhile, Alabama FB HC Saban suspended three players for a "violation of team rules and policies," so student-athletes Brown, Baker and James did not make the trip to Miami for the Orange Bowl. Also Noticed: Updated look at NET, RPI, KPI, BPI, SOR, KenPom & Sagarin ratings as of Dec. 24. One stop shop to compare most of the key MBB data points. (link); Duke has the most Quadrant 1 wins this year, with a 4-1 record in such games. Michigan (3-0), Kansas (3-1), Indiana (3-1), Wisconsin (3-2), Marquette (3-2) and Arizona State (3-2) have the second most. 57 teams have at least one Quadrant 1 win. (link); Former Louisville MBB HC Pitino via Twitter: "Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! I want to thank Dimitris Giannakopoulos for the unique opportunity to coach Panathinaikos -great tradition. I’m fired up to help!" So, looks like he's headed to coach in Greece. (link); More from Houston Chancellor Khator on her review of Cougars FB, "Right now, I’m going to chill out and have a nice holiday season and then think about it. […] (Saturday’s game) was disappointing, but it’s not the end of the world." (link)
Correction: We inverted a record on Monday morning as Conference USA went 4-2, not 2-4, in bowl action.
