Golden Nuggets on Reciprocal Board Agreements
Teamwork makes the dream work. Board work is, fundamentally, a collective effort, and it requires a unique kind of teamwork, not only among members but with the organization as well. A Reciprocal Board Agreement serves as an opportunity to discuss what board member and organization expect of each other. It identifies board member responsibilities and, significantly, what board members receive in turn to support their service and help ensure a good fit.
Examples:
As a board member, I will learn about the organization's mission and programs.
The organization will provide a board orientation and board handbook.
As a board member, I understand the board meets several times per year and will do my best to attend each meeting.
The organization will work to ensure board meetings are well run, productive, focused on decision-making, with agendas sent at least one week in advance.
I commit to increasing my skills as a board member.
The organization will provide/suggest appropriate learning opportunities.
As a board member, I will participate in fundraising to ensure the organization has the resources it needs to advance our mission.
The organization will provide a range of fundraising activities for board members to choose from and any relevant training needed to fulfill those obligations.
