Aloha Friends of Community Coalition Kauaʻi,

NEXT ROUND FOR CCK

Thanks to the core team of Community Coalition Kauaʻi (CCK) for meeting on November 20 and December 11 to develop several new priorities for CCK during the next two years. The strategic priorities were selected from the ideas and support coming from our larger membership, and ex-officio and current county representatives who appreciate the work of CCK.  We do not consider these strategic priorities as a definitive list, but rather a starting place, and are open to being responsive to other ideas and needs that are appropriate to the work of CCK.

SIDE NOTE

As you all know, between CCK’s two strategic planning meetings mentioned above, was the selection of the new Kauaʻi County Council Chair and Vice Chair. We felt strongly that the handling of this process by the County was absent of any transparency, with deals cut in backrooms. Needless-to-say, we felt compelled to bring it to the attention of the public. While we hoped it would open up a frank dialogue about how County business is conducted on this island, our public disclosure about what was going on in The Garden Isle (TGI) has not been without controversy. We realized that might be the case at the time of the placement of the ads, however, still made the decision that it was necessary to let the County Council know that we paying attention; and the public know what was going on between Council members.  We tried not to make this personal, nor attacking, but rather focus on the selection process and possible violation of the Council Charter. We lost some support from the community, but for the most part we were applauded for our courage, and in many ways actually garnered stronger support as a result of the ads.

Enough said, change does not come without a cost and we were willing to take the risk. Although we do not plan to lose sight of the core issue, we have moved on and are ready to start implementing our new priorities. We hope you will join us in these efforts as it will take many willing hands to implement these activities and bring about change.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES FOR 2019-2020

Please note that the specifics of these activities have yet to be fully articulated by the teams working on them. That will be the first task for each team. There is also room on all teams for additional members, so please contact us if you are interested in joining in. Additionally, if you belong to another organization with similar priorities that would like to partner with CCK, we are open to all possibilities. If you find our work is redundant in any area with the work another organization is engaged in, we are happy to move out of that area. We are most interested in the work getting done, not ownership.

Please let us know if you would like to join in on any of these activities.

Mahalo nui loa and happy holidays to all.
