Merry Christmas + Happy New Year

We are so grateful for your continued support in 2018. We just wanted to share a few highlights with you at the conclusion of this year.

The Haiti Center for Agroecology

In 2013, when we started, we had always dreamed of having our own facility to operate programs from and manage our own agroecosystems. In 2018, this dream became a reality with the launch of the new Haiti Center for Agroecology, a research and education center based outside of Jacmel, Haiti.

The center will host programs for both local university students and farmers, as well as, university students from the United States and potentially students/researchers from abroad.

Ultimately, it is our goal to develop solutions to localized agricultural problems through research, develop a farmer cooperative, and encourage increased productivity and socio-economic status within the surrounding agrarian communities.
The Freshman 15 Campaign launched on “Giving Tuesday” and will continue to run throughout the remainder of 2018, and into early 2019.

The goal was set at $3,000 to help finish the furnishings inside of the Center. This includes: mattresses, sheets, pillows, towels, etc. This will allow a comfortable stay for our first (freshman) class of 15 students in May.

We are halfway there!

Would you consider giving towards the remainder of this campaign?

  • One partnership was established with Eden Reforestation Projects on site, where they plan to propagate 80K – 100K fruit and forestry trees in 2019
  • The HCA is completely off-the-grid with nine solar panels and access to spring water.
  • The HCA was constructed using recycled and repurposed materials/structures from the property and land (i.e. old coffee processing factory)
  • Most of the furniture was constructed by local artisans using locally harvested and sustainable building materials (i.e. bamboo)
  • One university class was developed in partnership with Biola University, and will be hosted in May of 2019 with 15 undergraduate students and three faculty members
  • Harvest Craft helped to form a baseline survey that was conducted by Eden Projects, where 132 local families were interviewed to gather information about their demographics, farming practices, environmental concerns, and willingness to participate in agroforestry, farmer co-op, and training programs
  • Implementation of a vetiver (i.e. deep-rooted grass) system has begun on the property to stabilize the sloping land to prevent erosion and to begin the development of terraces that will eventually be planted with additional fruit trees and crops
  • One chicken project was brought to completion in the North of Haiti, through a partnership with Agrinotech, where 13 local at-risk youth were employed to raise over 3,000 broiler hens that were sold to market, and local restaurants
    • Additionally, this project investigated alternative feed concentrations to potentially offset high feed costs
  • Engaged in preliminary research at Biola University about the efficacy of implementing solar dehydrating systems to process fruit to mitigate post-harvest food waste and to increase economic and food security opportunities in Haiti
  • One donor trip was conducted, where Harvest Craft brought the I Dream of Fish team to the Cambodia project site to check up on the status of the project
  • Citrus orchard management training demos were conducted at the Cambodia project site with local university students to better teach how to prune and train trees for optimal production
  • CEO, Brendon Anthony, spoke at Biola’s Entrepreneurial Series on campus, addressing business students on how to manage a non-profit, and the story behind Harvest Craft
  • Anthony, was also hosted on a Business Podcast, called “The Biz Pod,” on the story, successes, and challenges of Harvest Craft
