While 2018 was, for many of us, an absolute annus horribilus, it was our first full year together here at the shop-- where people realize their truest and best selves, folks gather for comfort, clarity and community, and dreams come true.

So, how's this for nuts: James Patterson (yes, the author James Patterson!) knows about the store-- each year, since 2015, he selects recommended independent booksellers to send a holiday bonus as a token of his appreciation for the craft. There are angels among you, for there were a number of you who sent in a nomination for yours truly-- and I just got a check in the mail, WOW, thank you!

And then...
I'm red-faced to even write this: I've been chosen as the Business Person of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors-- there'll be a swanky affair later this month, and I'll do my best to not embarrass myself, but, there will be tears.

None of this is possible without each of you; I have the best business and life because of you; thank you from the footnotes of my heart.

Sarah's Pick:
Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir by Jean Guerrero

How do our parents’ choices shape the people we become? Jean Guerrero's Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir presents us with a young journalist’s quest to find herself through the search for her estranged father. Jean retraces her father’s steps from Mexico to the United States and back again, convening with his demons in the spaces between magic and madness. En route, the reader is invited to traverse a complex map of times and places, which draw connections among different stories of migration between Mexico and the United States and between "sanity" and "insanity.” This unclassifiable work blends recovery narrative, immigrant memoir, and ghost story into a border-crossing literary concoction that is simply impossible to put down.
Jenny's Pick:
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

It is second nature to respond, “I’m fine,” in polite conversation. Who wants to hear all the messy details? But author Honeyman embraces the mundane and dives into the life of an unusual, droll young administrative worker who feels terribly alone in the great city of London. Our socially awkward heroine hardly speaks a word to another human on the weekends. But Eleanor slowly opens up and climbs out of isolation when she befriends the kind IT guy, hatches plans (including painful forays in the pursuit of feminine "beauty") to snag a rock star boyfriend, and unpacks her complicated relationship with her mother. This is a story that will make you laugh and clasp a hand to your heart as you witness the power of friendship and self-development.
