NO GENERAL MEETINGS IN JANUARY OR FEBRUARY

BEGINNING IN 2019, BAS will not hold General Meetings in January and February.

Spring General Meetings will now be held in March/April/May, with our Annual Dinner also in April.
Fall General Meetings will be held in September/October/November, as they were in 2018.
So, beginning in the new year, BAS will hold seven meetings* per year.

Due to our March speaker's schedule, we'll meet on the FIRST Tuesday of the month, otherwise we'll meet on the THIRD Tuesday of April and May at either the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center or The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Conference Center in Kansas City, MO (click on active link for directions).
Free and open to the public.

* Special events and times may be scheduled, including our Annual Dinner in April.

Announcing the MO Young Birders Club of KC

KANSAS CITY CHAPTER STARTING IN JANUARY

All young birders ages 8 to 17 are invited to join us for the start-up of the new Missouri Young Birders Club of Kansas City. No previous experience is necessary, just a love for birds!

The Kansas City chapter is one of several Missouri Young Birders Clubs (MYBC) starting up around the state, an effort spearheaded and directed by the Missouri River Bird Observatory.  The aim of the MYBC is to bring young people together to enjoy and learn about birds and conservation in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. The club will meet monthly for birding field trips and other bird-related activities. In addition to birding, those youth who are interested will be given opportunities to take on leadership roles within the club and gain valuable experience. This is a club by young birders and for young birders, which means youth members will be involved in making decisions for all aspects of the club. Anyone interested in participating as an adult advisor to the group, please contact Sara Scheil.

Our first meeting will be Saturday, January 5, 2019, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center. The group will look for and identify birds along the trails around the nature center. In case of inclement weather, we'll observe bird activity at the center’s busy bird feeders. Bring your binoculars, field guides and/or birding apps.

All are welcome to stick around for a bird banding session at 10:00 a.m. by biologists from the Missouri River Bird Observatory. You’ll get to talk with the biologists and see wild birds up close! This session lasts until 1:00 p.m., weather permitting. If the weather is inclement (too windy or rainy), the banders will give a presentation for attendees. Questions? Contact Sara Scheil at 816-356-6986 or MYBCKC@gmail.com.

Centennial Year for Burroughs Audubon

2019 MARKS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF BURROUGHS IN KC

Conservation News

CONGRESS PASSES STRONG FARM BILL

The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill will greatly benefit waterfowl and all wildlife.  Steve Holmer, Vice President of Policy for American Bird Conservancy, said, “This Farm Bill marks a victory for birds and the conservation work of farmers and landowners, and utilizing the RCPP (Regional Conservation Partnership Program), we can better target conservation efforts to bird species most in need. The final agreement also dropped numerous harmful provisions affecting federal forests, endangered species, and dangerous pesticides that kill millions of birds each year.”  Read more here.

Bird Banding at the Burroughs Library

WITH THE MISSOURI RIVER BIRD OBSERVATORY

Saturday, January 12 - 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Our friends from the Missouri River Bird Observatory, Ethan and Dana, gently capture, band, and answer your questions about these wild birds. Visitors have the opportunity to photograph and release birds back into the wild! Please feel welcome to come and go at any time throughout the three-hour event. If you can't make it in January, this season's banding programs will be held on the second Saturday of each month, November through February and on the first Saturday of March.

Note: High winds, rain and extreme temperatures are hazardous to netted birds. In case of inclement weather, Ethan and Dana will present a non-banding program, including resighting previously banded birds. If the weather outlook is poor, please call 816-795-8177 to ask if bird banding is happening as scheduled.

January Field Trips

TO VARIOUS KANSAS AND MISSOURI LOCATIONS

Burroughs field trips are free to Audubon members and the public, and people of any age or level of experience are welcome to participate! Any trip may involve walking on a variety of terrain and surfaces, but some trips will be more strenuous than others. Trip leaders can advise you of the physical activity involved. Since we visit a number of wild areas and habitats, we respectfully ask that your pets not accompany us on the trail. If they're not given to vocal excitement, crated pets in vehicles are fine.
