Dr. Wisk's research focuses on improving access to care, health outcomes, and quality of life for youth with chronic medical conditions. She has methodological expertise in analyzing 'big data' (including claims data and large survey data) and applying advanced statistical techniques to address multilevel research questions.

Emily Martin, MDDr. Emily Martin joined the UCLA Palliative Care faculty in our hospitalist section . She completed Internal Medicine residency and Palliative Medicine fellowship at UC San Diego, and is currently participating in UCLA’s Medical Education Fellowship. GIM in the News

Yusuke Tsugawa, MD, PhDDr. Yusuke Tsugawa was quoted in a Bloomberg Businessweek article, Health-Care Paradox Threatens to Add to Japan’s Debt Problems," which looks at how the world's longest-living citizens are apparently causing medical costs to increase.

Regarding an new initiative to increase the role of primary care and decrease unnecessary specialist visits, Dr. Tsugawa noted, "Good access to care leads to better health only when the quality of care is high.”  He adds that a redesign of the health system “is imperative” for Japan to clamp down on overuse.

Dr. John Mafi was quoted in a Washington Post story looking at how increasingly common knee replacement surgeries may not be appropriate for all patients and could fail to remedy chronic pain and bring about complications.

Regarding inappropriate care in general, John points out, "Inappropriate treatment doesn’t harm only patients; it harms the health-care system by raising costs for everyone."

Congratulations to Dr. Wherry on her new RWJF award!
