Kansas is preparing to ask the NCAA to reinstate MBB student-athlete De Sousa, according to The Athletic's Davis, who reports KU will acknowledge that a violation took place and request that the NCAA's Academic and Membership Affairs Group restore DeSousa's eligibility immediately. Davis also points out that, as part of the request, KU will note that De Sousa has already served the likely designated suspension time of 30% of the season, per the NCAA's matrix of punitive measures for an improper payment of $2,500. The request, which Davis reports could be filed this week, would be the school's first acknowledgment that a violation occurred. (link); Meanwhile, Miami MBB student-athlete Hernandez is expected to file paperwork today concerning his reinstatement after a legislative committee upheld an original NCAA decision regarding his eligibility. Stadium's Goodman tweets: "Chance to get it right now comes with student reinstatement committee. Kid has already missed 16 games. Served his time. Let him play already." (link)
Arizona State Prez Crow discusses the state of the Pac-12, doesn't see why some are questioning the strategic vision of Commish Scott, "I’m basically urging everyone, it’s a long-term play so you have to take a long-term view. Relative to the long term, we’re doing exceedingly well on every front and we have more control. The others have sold their networks to commercial entities and thereby have lost control of their networks and lost control of their scheduling and other things, and we have not." Further, Crow believes the league's cash haul will exceed that of the SEC & Big Ten once new TV contracts are worked out, "we’re extremely well positioned with our network to do all kinds of things." More: Not terribly worried about a DirecTV agreement ("satellite television doesn’t look to me to be a long-term viable means of delivering content anyway"), supports the hire of FleishmanHillard to better position the conference in the eyes of fans & media with notes on the P12's geographic challenge, doesn't believe revenue is the only way conference success should be measured, argues competitive achievements are cyclical. (link)
South Carolina unveils its new $50M Cyndi and Kenneth Long Family Football Operations Center. Large open spaces, sharp branding & graphics, requisite barber's chair, recording studio, massive weight room, lots more freshness. Gamecocks student-athlete Turner: "There is no reason to leave. Everything is right here." USC AC Brown, who's also been on staff at Georgia, Miami (FL) & Wisconsin, "It’s the best I’ve been around by far. I just left a place where we just built a brand new indoor, which is a really nice facility. But that one doesn’t compare to anything else I’ve been around. It’s phenomenal." (link - article, link - video)
CBS Sports Chairman McManus to The Athletic's Deitsch in regards to the SEC on CBS deal, "It is a Saturday afternoon staple for CBS Sports and it delivers great audience for us. Listen, we have a great relationship with the SEC and it would be our hope that sometime between now and the expiration of contract they would re-do the deal. It is a very important part of our portfolio." Average per game TV ratings for the top-rated college FB package were up 13% to a 3.4 this past season, McManus also notes there is no exclusive window for renegotiation, but "would be surprised if both parties waited for the contract to expire to talk about a new deal." (link)
$55M annually for SEC on CBS is obviously a massive steal. $300M annually (at least) is what Arkansas sports management professor Dittmore argues the SEC should be getting for the package in this AthleticDirectorU piece. Such an increase would add ~$17.5M more dollars to each member institution's budget. Dittmore compares gross ratings points produced by the Big Ten's pact with Fox & Notre Dame's with NBC, "If we assume the current market rate for Tier I college football rights is around $4.9 million per ratings point (what Fox is paying for the past two seasons of Big Ten rights), and we assume the SEC will average a 3.1 rating (what CBS pulled on average the past two seasons) over 17 games, then…$4.9 million per rating point x 3.1 rating per game x 17 games = $258,230,000. Since 2017 SEC ratings were the lowest in the last five years, if we base our math on 2018 ratings alone, the price rises to $275,723,000." A 10% premium gets us to the $300M annual figure. The NCAA Sports Science Institute yesterday announced it will partner with Hilinski's Hope, a foundation set up to honor the memory of former Washington State QB Hilinski. Through the partnership, the NCAA will support Hilinski's Hope's work in improving mental health screening and awareness among student-athletes. NCAA Chief Medical Officer Hainline: "The NCAA Sport Science Institute is proud to partner with Hilinski's Hope to identify effective strategies for increasing the adoption and implementation of best practices for understanding and supporting student-athlete mental wellness at all NCAA-member institutions." Hilinski's Hope has so far raised roughly $300K to both provide resources for and remove the stigma around mental illness. (link)
Due to the ongoing government shutdown, Clemson FB's trip to the White House this year included a slightly different menu, consisting of McDonald's, Wendy's, Domino's and Burger King. President Trump, who paid for the meal with his own money, said he considered just serving salads but instead chose to spring for the burgers, noting the Tigers have some "very large people that like eating." (link); Columbia, SC officials expect 25,000 visitors to spur $9M in economic activity during the first and second rounds of this year's NCAA MBB Tournament. In addition, South Carolina officials believe hosting will help raise the school's national profile. Exec. Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff/CCO Bloom: "Being able to host an NCAA first and second round comes with the cache that this is a basketball town. More than just football can survive here. You’re going to get recognized. And you dribble past the court and you see ‘Columbia’ on the floor, that means a lot as well.” (link); San Diego hosted the second annual Surefire College Baseball Forum last week, with nine-minute-long, "speed-dating" style interviews between administrators and top assistant coaches from around the country. (link, link)

DI leaders reflect on the shared governance model established in 2014 which granted more autonomy to what would become known as the 'Power 5' conferences. According to many, including South Carolina Prez Pastides, chair of the DI Board of Directors during the reorganization, the move came at the right time: "Before the reform, I think we were heading toward a breaking point, where the needs of the more affluent conferences to better share the wealth with student-athletes were becoming divergent from the majority of Division I members that had no extra money and were subsidizing athletics with other funds." Minnesota Prez Kaler, current chair of the board, adds: "The creation of the autonomy group and process has allowed those schools to advance elements that apply to them without having to create a one-size-fits-all answer." Still, Pastides and Northwestern AD Phillips acknowledge that the system, while a decided improvement, isn't perfect and will require constant vigilance. Pastides: "We need to continue to examine how well we’re doing. We need to continue to see if we can be guided by our values and principles, and hopefully we can be as flexible and nimble in adapting to the changing societal forces we read about every day.” (link)
Central Michigan has established the Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics position thanks to a $1M gift from the family. Chips AD Alford, the position's inaugural holder: "Ron and Jean have been some of our most loyal and dedicated supporters throughout the years and I am proud to be able to be associated with them. This recognition is fitting as they have always taken pride in supporting all our student-athletes. They both bleed maroon and gold and I want to personally thank them for their lifelong commitment to Central Michigan Athletics and student success." (link)
Pittsburgh AD Lyke says that while FB HC Narduzzi does seek her counsel concerning difficult staff decisions, his staffing choices are ultimately his. "But yeah, I think he sees me as a confidante in some ways. At times, you need someone to just bounce ideas off of, right? He’s very thoughtful. He’s not going to make rash decisions. He doesn't take personnel decisions lightly at all. They weigh on him, because people matter to him.” Lyke also goes further in expressing her support for Narduzzi, calling him "genuine and real" and in coaching for the "right reasons." She also remarks on the importance of establishing more stability in the department, especially in football, where attrition can be particularly harmful based on the number of people it takes to run a program. "So, I felt that securing him for a long term, so people support, and don't question -- I mean, of course you can always question -- but really genuinely support his vision and what he’s trying to build here, was critical. ... He’s becoming a very good head coach. He wasn’t a head coach before. This is his first head coaching job, so you’re just really trying to build and establish that program as solid as you can because it is critical to the future success of our whole department.” (link)
North Carolina Chancellor Folt unexpectedly announces her plans to step away from the institution's top job after graduation this spring. Folt also decided to have the pedestal removed that previously held the Silent Sam statue, "The presence of the remaining parts of the monument on campus poses a continuing threat both to the personal safety and well-being of our community and to our ability to provide a stable, productive educational environment. No one learns at their best when they feel unsafe." UNC Board Chairman Smith says the university's leadership group was not consulted on the pedestal removal. (link)
The Knight Commission's Duncan & Cartwright ink on the legacy of Dr. Bernice Sandler, "the godmother of Title IX." "You come on too strong for a woman" were the eight words that Sandler faced when she tried to get one of seven open faculty openings in her department at Maryland back in 1969 & the eight words that changed the face of higher education. "Her example reminds us at the Knight Commission to continue putting principle first in the reform of intercollegiate athletics, to aim for ambitious change and to reject the easy, conventional skepticism about the supposedly intractable problems of big-revenue college sports." (link)

Latest SBJ: Headliners Smith & Ourand with some big news as Fox has passed on carrying the Big 12 FB Championship in 2019, 2021 & 2023. The network paid the league $25M for the 2017 contest, but reportedly wouldn't go above the high teens for the three odd-years on the table. Smith & Ourand report the Big 12 is looking for at least $20M per game. ESPN, who already has the 2020, 2022 & 2024 kicks, will now have a shot at '19, '21 & '23. A third party can't get involved until both Fox & ESPN are out. Key: "Bevilacqua Helfant Ventures is representing the Big 12 in the negotiations." (link); More context on Purdue's fan-centric study to determine the best way forward for Ross-Ade Stadium upgrades alongside Elevate Sports Ventures. Elevate CEO/San Francisco 49ers Prez Guido: "We’d like to think we could become a prominent player in the college space. We’ve got work to do; we just launched. But I think there’s enough business to go around, whether it’s premium, ticket sales, media, campuswide sales. … There are a lot of ways we’re going to see college sports morph into how professional teams are set up. We’ll see how we do. I think we can be some competition for some of these more established companies." (link); Geico is in as the NCAA's official auto & home insurance partner. $10M to $20M annually "depending on how much media is included." Key: "Scout Sports and Entertainment brokered the deal and will support activation plans." (link); Endeavor is changing the branding of NeuLion to "Endeavor Streaming." Endeavor CTO Wilson & Prez of Business Operations Staeger will lead the new group. (link)
New Mexico has hired the Dan Beebe Group (DBG) to "foster safe work, educational and athletics environments" for student-athletes, coaches and staffers. Beebe on assistance of the Lobos, "We want to be able to stand in front of people we can say, 'Hey don’t take New Mexico’s word for it, we didn’t live here, we don’t work here, we didn’t get our degrees from here, we’re not season ticket holders -- we don’t have a dog in this fight. Let us tell you all the things we’ve learned about (and) what you can do if you have an issue.'" For UNM, Beebe says the firm has conducted an independent human relations risk assessment, a draft of which has been sent to UNM. "We scrub all the policies and procedures that are online and other places. It’s where we also talk to people on campus about what are their roles, how do they handle things, what happens when somebody brings up issues, that kind of thing.” AD Nunez expects to have a final report from DBG in the spring. (link)
Incarnate Word AD Wickstrom chats with 1.Question's Brown on the challenge of growing an athletics department using only self-generated revenue. Notable from the conversation, "I believe we help put the president in a better position with the academic side of campus if he doesn't have to keep increasing funding for the athletics program. […] When coaches are on board with helping to raise revenue and helping to sell tickets, it's a win win because they get to talk about the Student-Athlete experience and people always want to talk about the Student-Athlete experience. […] Everybody has the capacity to give more if you keep delivering great experiences." 14-minute chat. (link)
Colorado MBB attendance is on pace to hit a program low not seen since the 2009-10 season. Buffs AD George: "I know in talking to our marketing team, we're really going to focus on getting students out. For us to put that many season tickets out for football, I'd like to see our students come out and support what we're doing out there. Because we need them. They're important. Having them at our contests makes a lot of sense. I know our marketing team is ramped up to get them out, but it's not from a lack of them having tickets or knowing that there's games. We just need to get the students to show up." (link)
"The Air Force Academy’s athletic program will get an ombudsman to deal with complaints and a new system for cadets to anonymously report concerns after an independent review of the program that stemmed from two hazing incidents since late 2016." Collegiate Sports Associates performed the review and found that "the academy had strong programs in place to instill military values and prevent sexual assault, but confused lines of communications and a rigid command structure allowed misconduct." Superintendent Lt. Gen. Silveria: "While we are heartened by the review stating that our program is in many ways ‘a model for NCAA programs with high standards for behavior and performance and specific training protocols for developing future leaders,’ we also have opportunities to improve our culture and climate, and we are committed to implementing programs to address these areas."
