Principal's Message

Dear EGRMS Families,

I would like to thank the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation, Spectrum Health, and the Community Action Council for their sponsorship of our Tall Cop presentation tonight.  Officer Galloway will also be presenting to all secondary faculty to provide them professional development on the signs and symptoms of youth substance abuse.  More information about tonight’s presentation can be found here.

In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there will be no school next Monday, January 21, 2019.  The middle school Champions of Diversity and BRIDGES Implementation Team have collaborated on a series of lessons focused on Dr. King and his message.  There will be an assembly this Friday afternoon honoring Dr. King followed by an art project in BRIDGES classrooms.  We will also formally launch a service project during Friday’s assembly.  Our keynote speaker will once again be Mrs. Lisa Knight from the Urban League of West Michigan.  Mrs. Knight is the Director for the Center for Health, Wellness, and Youth at the Urban League and 95.8% of EGRMS students reported her keynote to be good or excellent in a follow-up survey last year.

We are excited for Mrs. Knight to continue the conversation and the Champions of Diversity are grateful Mrs. Knight will also conduct small group sessions with 6th graders in the morning.

Parents interested in local events next Monday honoring Dr. King might review a list published by
Experience GR as one source for ideas.

Sincerely,
Anthony Morey
Principal

Our next PTO membership meeting will be this Thursday, January 17 at 8:30 a.m., in the Learning Commons.  Amy Stuursma from the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation will be speaking about EGR Now&Forever.  See you there!

Spring Drama Club!
Spring Drama Club is starting January 31st! This spring, we will be learning acting games and improv, as well as work on a one-act play and monologues! This is a very low-key club that focuses on improving existing acting skills and learning more about the techniques of acting.  Club meetings will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Participating in drama club is a great way to try out acting for the first time or to hone your skills for future productions. Students will have an opportunity to perform what they have learned on May 16 and 17 in the Little Auditorium at the high school. Contact Mrs. Kastanek at mkastane@egrps.org with any questions or visit her website at https://sites.google.com/egrps.org/egrmsdrama/home

Students are issued “Way to Go” cards for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility or Personal Best by doing the right thing!  As students receive these cards, they are placed in the container located in the Main Office.  Every Friday, names are drawn and announced during the afternoon announcements.  Each student selected, has the opportunity to pick a prize from the prize basket simply as a way to say “Thanks, we appreciate and recognize you!”

We will be drawing our first winners of 2019, this Friday, January 18.

Put Saturday, March 23 on your social calendar, and mark it with a big gold block “E.”

Sip and Support, the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation’s annual spring fundraiser, is returning to the Community Center that night, and you’ll want to be there.

Last year was the first year for Sip and Support, after ten years of Hurrah!, and it was an enormous success by any measure. Hundreds of people attended, enjoying refreshments, dancing, and making new friends while catching up with old ones.

Like Hurrah! before it, Sip and Support is more of a fun-raiser than a fund-raiser. The proceeds from the event help the Foundation fund vital school programs and enhancements to benefit all of our students. Just as important, though, is that the event is truly a celebration of the link between our community and our schools. It’s a night to share in the pride we all have in our public schools, which are at the center of our East Grand Rapids community.

Look for invitations to Sip and Support in your mailbox next month.
