Happy 2019!

If you know anything about me, you know how much I love to race. I think I participated in 35 running or triathlon events in 2018 and loved every single moment. What I love about going to an event as many times a year as possible is that I get to re-connect with other folks who share the same passion for endurance sports that I do. I know there are some people who are intimated about signing up for an event because they feel they won’t measure up to their own expectations and that other people might be faster than they are. Personally, I don’t think there is a better way to start the day and here’s why:
  • If I am doing a running event I can run with old friends or make new ones along the way.
  • Going to an event I haven’t done before is almost like taking a mini-vacation without the hassle of packing anything or getting on a plane. You get to tour an area you’ve never seen before and possibly find some brand-new places to run, swim, or bike.
  • Rather than carrying food or drink with you like when you are out training, think of event day as a catered workout. Throughout the day people will be offering you a salad bar of everything from Gatorade to pretzels to assorted flavors of Gummy Bears. Sweet!
  • If you’re running a 5K or 10K or doing a sprint-distance triathlon, the odds are good you’ll be in a beer garden hanging out with your new best buddies before 10 a.m. What could be better than that?
  • Nobody gets up at 5 a.m. to come to an event that starts at 7 a.m. who is in a bad mood. There is something about event-day adrenaline that I love, especially when I realize that it leads to huge smiles on everyone there.
  • If you are participating in a running event, triathlon, or obstacle race you haven't done before, you are guaranteed to set a personal best.
My New Year Challenge to you is to have you pick out an event that you haven't done before and sign up for it. There is nothing better than having a goal to get you motivated and there is nothing better than accomplishing that goal and finishing an event that will keep you coming back for more.

I think the interviews I've selected below will help you stay motivated and will be good company for you on your long training runs or indoor cycling sessions.

See you at the races!

Kirstie Ennis graduated high school at 15 and enlisted in the Marines when she was 17. After six years serving as an aerial gunner on helicopters, she survived a crash during a mission over Afghanistan but was seriously injured. Despite losing her left leg above the knee, undergoing 38 surgeries, and having to have her face totally rebuilt, she has been on the cover of ESPN Magazine’s Body Issue and is now on a path to climb the highest peaks on every continent.

Joe De Sena is one of my all-time favorite interviews and the founder and creator of Spartan Race, which now has 271 races in 41 countries. His next venture? Spartan Trail10K and Half Marathon trail running races in some pretty epic locations. When it comes to motivation, the guy who's encouraged hundreds of thousands of people to Stop, Drop, and Give Me 10 Burpees is a pretty good place to start.

Top professional triathlete Caroline Steffen became a mother a year ago and wasn’t sure if she’d ever race again. She made the decision to come back and in early December she not only raced her first full Ironman in four years at Ironman Western Australia, she broke the course record with an 8:44:52 and punched her ticket to Kona!

Marcus Cook was weighing in at 489 pounds when he decided to change his life. He started by walking 20 minutes a day, eventually moved to triathlon, and lost 250 pounds. This past October, Marcus finished the Ironman World Championship. His journey shows once again the power of sport.

Dr. David Clayton, from RX5, has played a huge role in me dropping 25 pounds and going from 24 percent body fat to 16 percent body fat over the past few years. He came in studio to share his thoughts on how people can become fitter than ever before.
