Thanks to the generous donations of our many friends and family connected to ALP, the annual Usborne Book Drive was a complete success. Our goal was to raise $1800 with Usborne matching 50% or 900 additional dollars in books. The drive generated $2140! Together with the $900 Usborne match, Director Ann Copeland was able to purchase $3040 in new books for tutors to select and gift to their students. Thank you ALP community and special thanks to our Usborne Campaign Representative, Teresa Hoover, who also sponsored a Thrivent Action Team to lead the drive.

Christmas Brunch 2018
The holidays were welcomed in with a large group of tutors enjoying a holiday brunch at the home of Board Member, Susan Cruz, on Saturday, December 1st. 32 members of our team shared food, friendship and stories of their students. Selections from the library were available for everyone to browse and select new books for their students.
Every tutor was presented with two new interactive learning games. Foam cubes and a new Frog Hop board game, complete with lily pad game board and frog playing pieces, were given to tutors to take back and share with students. Tracie Segura, ALP Training Instructor, led the group in playing the game. The winner was the only child at the event, our own Jackson Read, son of Board Member Shayla Read, proving it was educational, competitive and fun!

On October 11, 2018, ALP received grant money in the amount of $1930 from the Pleasantburg Rotary Club of Greenville for the purchase of Wilson Reading Books. Rotary President, Brian Thomas, and Director Larry Lee presented the check at the October lunch meeting to the ALP grant team: Sharon Lynch, Alice Sobray and Denise Ruby. We are grateful for this partnership and financial support to ALP and our students!

The next training session will be offered June 17-26, 2019.
The training session is in an eight-day format. The first week is a classroom format with practice sessions in small groups. Class days start at 8:30 am and end at 3:30 pm. The second week consists of three days of individual practice lessons in the mornings and additional classroom instruction after lunch. During the practicum days, class starts at 8:30 am and ends by 2:00 pm.

Meet Sandi Smith, our newest member to join The Augustine Literacy Project of the Upstate Board of Directors!

Sandi trained as a tutor in 2016. She has a BA in Sociology, and an MBA in technology management. Her professional background includes project management, education data warehousing, reporting, and analysis. She is currently a private Orton-Gillingham tutor, and a candidate for Associate level membership in the AOGPE. Sandi is the mother of three school age children, one of who is dyslexic. She knows that not all struggling readers can attend specialized schools and views working with ALP as an opportunity to give back to the community, change the lives of children, and break the cycle of poverty.

Once again, ALP received the benefit of four sponsored action teams this year from Thrivent Financial and its members. Each Action Team grant provides a $250 Visa card as seed money to purchase teaching materials, books and supplies. We wish to thank Darlene Zinnel, who directed her two Action Team monies toward our summer training program supplies and also the purchase of "Read? Yes I Can!" books by Deborah Watkins. Also, Denise Ruby, ALP Board member who used her Action Team to purchase High Noon books, which is a series of decodable books for older readers, and Teresa Hoover, Usborne Representative, who added her card to the purchase of additional books through the annual book drive.

ScanSource awards ALP $12,460 to fund its summer training program. ScanSource encourages its employees to donate their resources and time to improve the lives of children, foster better education, and enhance the community. For more than 25 years, the ScanSource Charitable Foundation has provided opportunities for all ScanSource employees to positively affect the places in which they live and work—through monetary donations and/or volunteering.
The Foundation is entirely overseen by ScanSource employees, and devotes 100% of its finances directly to supporting children, educational programs, and organizations in need.
