Dear Friends-

As we were about to begin the New Year we received the final audit and review report from the Rotary International Foundation.  You may recall that in 2017 we received a grant sponsored by the Lakeville Rotary club.  The grant came through the International Rotary Foundation in the amount of $206,000 for loan capital for our SACCOS.

Last year we followed the borrowers of these funds and reported on them.  Following our report, in late October and November, the Rotary Foundation sent a team to inspect our program.  The team went over records, interviewed officers, met with borrowers, and interviewed the Joint SACCOS staff and board members in Iringa.  Then they prepared their report.

The Rotary reviews have three categories of comments – Program Strengths, Concerns, and Weaknesses.

First came the Weaknesses.  There were none!  Then came the Concerns.  Again there were none!  Finally came the Strengths.  There were many!  Some comments directly from their report –

“The (Iringa based) organizations … are professional and competent.”

“(There is) Good management of the funds.”

“(There is a) well streamlined structure.”

“(There were) 774 loan beneficiaries, well over the original project target of 500.”

“The formulation and implementation of the Integrated Development Center concept … is commendable.”

“(The IDCs) will help to address the farmer’s challenges in skills development and … market access… In the long term this will enhance the sustainability.”

There were of course some suggestions on how to further improve/develop the program (and we will try to implement these).  But overall it was a very, very positive report.

Since we received the review we have gotten further endorsements and congratulations from a variety of Rotary officials and organizations.  Overall we feel that we could not have gotten a better result!

So we can now add Rotary International to our growing list of endorsements!  So far we can count among our endorsements positive reports from –

  • Rotary International
    • “Good management of funds”
  • USAID
    • “Best program we have reviewed in Southern Africa”
  • NAFAKA
    • “Excellent program implementation”
  • Charities Review Council
    • “They meet or exceed all requirements”
  • Iringa Regional Government
    • “Best program for family health and welfare in the region.”
  • District of Iringa Government
    • “Outstanding program.”
  • The Tanzania President’s Office
    • “A model for our country”
  • The Treasury Department of Tanzania
    • “The best program in our country and the most successful SACCOS they have seen”
  • The Diocese of Iringa
    • “Iringa Hope is the most successful program in our Diocese”
  • And many, many local and regional officials and organizations

Of course the real endorsement that counts is that of our many members in Iringa and that of YOU, our supporters.

Blessings

Tom

Mission Statement:

Iringa Hope is a US, non-profit corporation dedicated to alleviating poverty in rural Tanzania.

About Iringa Hope:

Iringa Hope is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation working in the rural Iringa region of Tanzania.

We work to alleviate poverty among our members by providing access to micro credit, education and training, and markets and supplies for their farms.

We do this by developing village based micro finance cooperatives called SACCOS (Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies) and Farmer's Cooperatives called AMCOS (Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies).

All of our cooperatives are locally owned and operated and are fully self-supporting.  Rather than a program, our members see Iringa Hope as a part of their communities.

Iringa Hope Annual Report

The 2018 Annual Report is now available.  As in years past we have posted the report online (you can find all of our annual reports online, just search for Iringa Hope Annual Report).

Among the things you will find in our 2018 annual report is a listing of all of the locations where Iringa Hope is currently working.  This year’s report lists 44 SACCOS locations and 22 AMCOS locations.  (Actually all of our locations are at some stage of forming an AMCOS, but only 22 of them have an active group.)  Overall our various locations have members from 159 villages, with over 20,000 people involved in one or more of the programs of the cooperatives.

Here are a few facts about the year –
  • The number of locations making loans – 35
  • The number of villages served – 159
  • The number of trained officers in the villages - 174
  • The total number of families belonging at all locations (including AMCOS and SACCOS)– 3,100+ representing 20,000 people!
  • The total number of loans for the year– 1,879
  • The average amount borrowed by a member - $443
  • Our repayment rate – 98%+
  • The number of Integrated Development Centers in operation – 15
  • The average increase in family income – 170%
  • The number of jobs created by our members – over 1,200
Last year we raised $365,216 and sent $318,368 to Iringa for loans and building construction.  Our overhead was once again paid 100% by our board members meaning that 99+% of donations went directly to our work in the villages!
