Wonder-ful Math with MoMath!

Join the National Museum of Mathematics for a day of interactive fun! From slicing shapes with lasers to exploring giant mazes, designing roller coasters, and more, there's something for everyone. MoMath will also setting up an outpost of Additions, the shop at MoMath, for all your Festival gift needs. Learn more

A Fine Art of Problem Solving:
How Mathematicians Use Braids to Save the Day and Take Over the World

Dr. Nancy Scherich, University of California, Santa Barbara

Lots of people love braiding, from hairdressers to mathematicians! Dr. Scherich has been a dancer all her life, and recently decided to mix together her passions for math and dance. The 2017 winner of the “Dance Your Ph.D.” contest will discuss how she uses dance to teach the mathematics of braids. Learn more

Dr. Francis Su, Harvey Mudd College

Some think of mathematics as cold, lifeless, and unemotional. But math can inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to play, seek truth, pursue beauty, explore freedom, and build community. The Physics of Football
John Urschel, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Join former Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman John Urschel, a Ph.D. candidate in math, as he showcases the math of football through comments on video clips of live football plays. Learn more

Urschel, an avid amateur chess player, will also present on The Geometry of Chess, sharing some of the beautiful geometrical concepts found in this deeply mathematical game.
